Kona Help...

Im looking into getting a new bike (mostly for xc) and settled on the kona blast (mostly cause its a kona others i thought about were gf piranha and the cannondale f5) problem is no one not even within 250 miles sells kona bikes i was wondering if the kona is worth it or whether or not this is a smart move...

Thanks in advance!! Miguel

it's not worth it. compared to the piranha, the kona is not up to par for its price. it's got an acera 24 spd. drivetrain compared to a 27 spd. deore/alivio drivetrain. the piranha's bb5 brakes blow away those hayes. the only thing the kona does have over the piranha is the 7005 aluminum frame, which will be slightly lighter. some people will think the kona has a better fork, but it's really about the same on both bikes.

with the kona, you'll also lose the support or service plan an LBS gives you if you have to get one from far away. My LBS gives free tune ups and wheel truing, which add up really fast (about $30 for wheels and $20 for a tuneup).

all in all:
kona--better frame material
GF--better drivetrain (2 levels up), 27 speed, better brakes, probably better service

hit up the piranha, i think you'd love it.

It really depends on whats important to you. I bought my kona because the frame is nice and I can upgrade it as I get more advanced and the frame won't need to be replaced until I go FS. If you wanna upgrade later and not be limited by the frame I say go with the kona but if you wanna buy a bike that has better parts and not upgrade anything at all then I'd assume the gf is the better out fo the box bike. I also like the kona because no oen else has one. Just my 2 cents. It's your money. Get the one you want.

if you want to upgrade the konas drivetrain to 9spd, you will need to purchase new shifters, new cassette, new rear derailleur, poss a new front derailleur, and a new chain. That could cost a lot... since you are buying a new bike mostly for xc. go for the 27 spd.

I'm not sure about the diffrences in drivetrains. Sounds like some research is in order to find out which bike is the right one for your particular situation. I like my kona very much you may wat one too or not. You can't really let someone else decide for you. All we can do is tell you the strengths and weaknesses of both bikes. I've heard good things about both bikes and bad. Just research the bikes and pick the one that works for you. Sounds to me like the GF would be the best bet for XC if it has more gears.

PS: I bought it online from a freindly kona dealer. I told him about my kona dealer being 150 miles away. Shipped it to my door.

I've never seen one at my local trails. Most ride specialized or trek. Some look at my bike a bit sideways and begin to ask questions about the brand. Thats always a good way to make a freind.
