ideas on pricing of new 29ers?

Hi

We sold out of Motobecane Outcast 29er at once {we will get more in 4 weeks}
But we are also getting in 2008 Fantom 29 and Fantom 29 Pro
this is a new type bike for us and we are having a hard time finding comparable bikes to judge prices on.

Any ideas on setups like this

Fantom 29
Aluminum frame with 2008 Dart 3 [29] w/ lockout
27-speed LX/Deore
Avid BB5
WTB Rims w/ Gravity hubs

Fantom 29 PRO
Aluminum frame with 2008 TORA [29] w/ lockout
27-speed XT/LX
Avid Juicy 3
WTB Rims w/ Gravity hubs

I would appreciate any feedback on what would be aggressive pricing on these

thanks

mike

any chance you can give out some info on the Outcast? Even the Motobecane site does not list it among current models yet.

-How much will it cost?
-How much does it (or its frameset) weigh?
-Any idea of a more exact time when it will be for sale again?

I was on the verge of buying another SS 29er frameset when I saw these for sale on Ebay. Unfortunately, they are sold out of all but the smallest size. Then I tracked down that BD had briefly had them. It seems like it would fit my needs, and the price is good, but without any info I am kind of stuck.

thanks

jim

Shouldn't the bikes be very closely priced to similar 26" bikes? From the little bit of looking around I've done thus far on 29ers the prices are always very close between the two.

you would think so; and that may happen if the 29er tend grows

but all 29er parts cost more
forks - much more
frames - a little more
rims -- more
tires - much more

so the volume of sales in 29er has to go up for the prices to come down
but we are trying to do that and be on the leading edge of bringing the prices down

From the fisher website (the only big company selling 29ers), for $110 more you can get the caliber 29, and it comes with supposedly better components. I hate sram, so it doesn't look that much better to me.

Also couldn't you just take your usual margin and shave it slightly, I'm guessing you charge approximately 60% more than wholesale, so just make it 50.

I'd say the one with the dart would be worth about $700 to me.

Specialized will be offering a Rockhopper 29er at about $700 that is spec'd with a Dart.

I think the motobecane should still be like $650-675 because it's spec'd more like a RH comp. Specialized has been getting cheap on components lately, like alivio/acera on a $660 RH disc.

these prices are a bit low for 29ers
but I will shot for as close to this as I can get

I would like to see lots of riders try these quickly as the frame is really really nice; so I want the word out

maybe worth underprising for a while to get that done

There you go, in the grocery buisness we use to have "loss leader items" that we would take a loss on to get customers in the door. I guess the thinking was they would buy more while there or maybe come back at a later date. You know, the whole customer for life thing! I think the fact that your asking us is an insight to you buisness ethics, good for you!

Those prices are not totally out of line for the component set, especially considering the Ibex Section 29's price of $999 with vastly superior components.

And any profit is profit. If they go too fast, the next batch in will be priced accordingly, no?

Will you be offering a frame-only option for the Fantom 29, similar to the Outcast frame that is on E-bay right now? I'd be more interested in a lower priced frame that I could build on myself.

Not Necessarily. As the quality of even the lower series parts get better, they can use the lower series to reduce prices on their bikes.

And Specialized is finally going to have a 29er?

Specialized should be cheaper because they will be spec'ing a bike with a fork that you'll have to change out immediately. They should just spec it with a rigid steel fork.
