Wheelset Recommendation for Newbie

Hello all,

I have been sneaking around these forums trying to get a grasp of what wheelsets everyone was recommending to others. However, I find that piecing facts together from different forums and review sites are making my brain swell. I have been actively looking for wheelsets from all the online bike sites I can get my hands on as well has bugging all the LBS about what they thought and recommend (think they are slowly getting annoyed).

But let me get straight to the point. I just got my bike about a month ago and usually go on 3 hour bike rides everyday. I like taking rocky trails with big bumps and all the downhill sections I can bike to. I dont do major drops, maybe 1-3 feet at most. I am 5'7" at 140lbs. My budget is $200 or less but I can add abit if the wheelset is worth it. In addition, I only need a front wheel, so would be knee of me to get a set or just a wheelset?

The specs I am looking at are:
- Disc and V-brake compatible
- Tubeless is a plus
- Durability over lightness, but weight is somewhat important.
- Shimano XT or comparable hub

A few wheelsets that I am looking at currently:
Mavic Crossland = $220/$240 (silver/black)
Shimano XT w/Sun Rhyno Lite XL = $180
Bontrager Maverick = $199

Hopefully, this gives some a baseline. I do appreciate any recommendations anyone has.
Thanks.

I just got a set of Mavic Crosslands from Jensonusa.com. They meet all the requirements you listed, and have gotten great reviews since they came out. I highly recommend them.

I put a months worth of riding on Mavic Crosslands after I crashed and bent my front Mavic Crossmax SL. I've seen nothing but good reviews online and the lbs recommended the Crosslands too. They are a great bang for the buck.

You won't impress posers with these, but they are v and disc compatible and very rugged. I have had these for a while and very happy. Look for a sale and get them dirt cheap.

I have found the quality similar to Mavic Crossrides which can cost a lot more.

Why is your heart set on XT hubs? They're actually pretty heavy (at least mine, circa '05 are).

Also, why disk and v-brake compatible? Do you have v-brakes now and are thinking of upgrading to disc?

That is correct I have V-brakes currrently and will be upgrading after I get some shoes and clipless. That is also something to consider... If I do save some cash those can go to my shoes and clipless pedals...

I was really only putting the XT hubs as a baseline for any other recommendations. Since I really have no clue what is a good hub. Im just hoping to get some wheelsets that fit my budget and wont leave me at the side of the road in a couple of months.

Oh if you all are wondering. I was coming down a trail pretty quick and the path made a sharp turn and I couldnt brake quick enough and ran into a tree... Sled 30ft down the hill and found my front wheel cant be trued...

I have been looking around now and have one more question...

I have my other tire that came with my bike and it is still usable but I wonder if there is anything else I will need to make my wheelset tubeless? Will I be just need order the Mavic Crossland and slap the old tires on it and pump it up? Or will I need to get tubeless specific tires and other things to make it go?

why not something like

Sun Rhyno lite with XT hubs or Mavic XM317 with XT hubs.....they run pretty cheap on Jansen.usa....pricepoint.com and ebay.com

Also sierratradingpost.com has a cane creek wheelset that you can buy for about $200 (if you get 30% discount coupon that would be even cheaper).

https://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/4...-Set-of-2.html

I have no personal experience with these wheelset. so recommending that would be kind of nonsensical. but, some people may be about to enlighten us with reviews or commens of cane creek wheels.

good luck.
