back pain

I have a problem with my back getting pretty sore after a short time of riding. For example, today I rode for 45 minutes and my back was extremely tight and it was painful to sit up straight. Is this common and what are some things I could do to lessen the pain? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Play with your seat angle a bit or you could do what I did. Buy a 7" travel bike with an upright riding position. Lot's of cush = no more back pain for me.

You might want to try stretching before and after riding.

is it upper back pain or lower back pain?

Have you had your bike professionally fitted? I was getting some nasty pain between my shoulder blades and went to my LBS to have the bike fit checked; it turned out that the handlebars were too low, and also that the grips were too far apart for me. The guy at the LBS moved my controls in a bit and cut the bars to fit me, and I haven't had a problem since. It was also very inexpensive - only about $10 for him to go over the whole bike and set it up right for me.

Hope that helps some!

I have the same problem when I ride my hardtail. When I ride my full suspension bike, I feel no pain (except when I crash).

Thats what I had. Get an appointment with your doctor, or even a specialist if you can get one.

When the excercise ball, try putting your stomach on the ball. Then lift up one leg and the opposite arm. (Right leg + left arm) Hold it for about 5 seconds. Then do the other leg and other arm. I had to do this for a couple of months, and it really helped. Hopefully it can do the same for you.
