My XT/rhynolites are tanks at around 2500 grams. Plus, now that I have discs, the machined braking surfaces are hideous. I'll be needing a new wheelset after selling these and didn't really want to spend more than $200. Afterall, I refuse to go into next semester without the xbox 360!

So I was wondering if the XT/717 set from Performance makes sense because if the set ever goes bad on me I can just return them.

The weight they have listed does seem a little heavy. 977g for the front, 1043g for the rear = 2020g for the set. I would still be saving about a pound in rotating weight compared to my rhynolites...most importantly all weight saved from the rim.

I do wish Performance had them laced to hope pro 2 hubs so if I ever go the 20mm axle route, I'd be covered...but for now I'm committed with my nearly brand new RS Revelation...

So any comments on the XT/717 set? Also it appears the Perfomance set requires centerlock, so does anyone know where the cheapest adapters are (shipping to Texas included)?

My cousin bought a set of XT/717 (rim brake though) just about a year ago. He hasn't had any problems with them yet, but hasn't rode a lot either. I have thought about those myself or the Mavic Crossrides (I think) for $200.00 also. I have heard pretty good feedback from a few about the Mavics as well.

I don't know, green... the Crossrides seem a little chintzy. I'm riding them now, and one rim is very poorly machined (and I'm using V-brakes on the back, so it matters). The rims are pinned, not welded, which I think is just stupid for a mountain bike. I guess they were pretty damn cheap, though, so I can't expect too much. It just annoys me to see pointless bling, like bladed spokes, or 24 spokes on a disk wheel, when the basics aren't really taken care of.

32 spoke wheel with similar weight to the other one you are considering. If you are embarrased about a Forte brand product on your bike you can take the sticker off the rim

I have been using them all year without an issue. They are still 100% true. I weigh 210 lbs and ride pretty hard XC.

Guess I could just paint the rim black. Any idea what the rim itself weighs? I couldn't find anything in google. The Terramax set seems about similar in weight to the xt/717 combo, and I'd have the same warranty with it.

So who has experience with the Terramax wheels? Dropping a pound on this overweight dakar XLT sure would be nice!

I think the logo is a decal and can be pulled off (I never tried). You can also just ride in the mud

Here's a guess at weight of the rim by itself. According to the Performance Bike site, the built front Terramax wheel weighs 917 g. Also according to the Performance site, a 14 gauge stainless spoke weighs 7 g (a pack of 20 is listed at 140 g). A spoke nipple weighs around 1 g (actually .94 according to a random website I found, but we'll call it 1 g). I'm not sure what hub they're using for this wheel, so I assumed something on par with Deore or Hone. I couldn't find Deore hub weights, but a Hone front disc hub weighs 201 g. The Performance site lists rim tape as a "recommended accessory", so I'm assuming the weight does not include tape. So... we get something like this:

7 x 32 = 224 g for spokes
1 x 32 = 32 g for nipples
201 g for hub

917 - (224 + 32 + 201) = 460 g for the rim only

This is basically a wild guess, but it doesn't seem too far off.
