RockShox Dart 1 Question
 

Hey I have rockshox dart 1, and there were just a few things i was wondering. I'm quite new to bikes, actually, i had just bought my first "real" mountain bike just 2 months before. Well i went on the rockshox site and to the Dart category, and found a picture of the dart1s. i noticed a difference between the ones i have and the ones on the site though, which leads to my first question. on the site, http://www.sram.com/en/rockshox/crosscountry/dart/#, they show a picture of the dart 1s and 2s together. I noticed the shox have a lockout adjuster? mine doesnt seem to have that. it just has a Preload adjuster, and instead of the lockout, the right side is occupied by a flat knob that wont budge. ( look at picture ) so i was wondering, were my rockshox supposed to come with the adjuster or is that only for dart 2s? Also, when i adjust my sag with the preload adjuster, when do i know to stop? i mean i was twisting it, and it just keeps going..of course i was twisting it for too long, but does it just come to a hault when it can be no longer adjusted? sorry for the long post, and I'm newb, so any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

even within the models (dart 1), there are different options. The with the advanced options (rebound, lockout, compression, etc.) will cost more. The bike's manufacturer simply opted for the cheaper fork. Unless you are an advanced rider, the lockout, rebound, and all the other toys won't help you much. Ride hard, and if you feel the necessity, upgrade.

The preload knob should stop eventually..

hes not talking about the preload knob that wont budge...there is a bolt like fixture on the right side of the fork where a lockout function would be...your dart is just like mine...one preload knob...the dart in itself is designed for Entry level mountain bikers so it has basically just bare bones function. My advice is to beat the crap out of it...ride and ride hard...test your limits and your riding ability and riding preference...the dart is an XC fork but when you start learning what you have fun doing you will need to upgrade to a fork that accomodates your riding style...I had a dart 2 and after discovering that I had the most fun doing "all mountain" I upgraded to a fork that was better suited for all mountain riding.

thanks guys, your replies helped a lot, great to know that i didn't get jipped. so back to the preload adjuster, if i keep twisting it a certain direction, will it eventually max out? if not, how would i tell i've reached the amount of sag i need.

it will eventually max out. It may just take many revolutions. also, don't expect much change from the fork with the preload. Lower end forks don't change that drastically with the controls.

As far as I know - I am using the RockShox Dart 2 - only this model has a lockout option. more precisely the Dart 2 has a lockout option directly on the fork during the dart 1 hasn't any option. The Dart 3 has the lockout on the handlebar.


But I can promise you: not even the lockout button does its job perfectly: Nevertheless my Dart 2 goes approximately 4mm down although I locked out my fork.

in the manual I think it says you want your sag in between 9 and 15mm I think...so adjust the preload until the fork sags that much.

The other side will budge if you use a wrench....the inside is hollow so theres no need to open it... >_> I guess it's for drainign water if it somehow got in. Or rebuilding the fork.
