I see more and more (big) bike webshops having a 29er category this summer, while there wasn't one last year. Whether it's a fad or not, I don't know, but it's growing, whatever the heck it is. The few shops that still don't have such a category, if you make a search for "29er", you'll find plenty of hits - which, again, wasn't the case last year.

is it that the stock is a reasult of increased demand? or is it the outcome of the theory "supply creates its own demand"? or a bit of both?

Bike ≠ Car ≠ Ped.
If "supply creates demand" applies to me, then it worked on me. I wouldn't have thought to try a 29er if I didn't have one available to me (I wouldn't have thought to try a Lefty fork, either). The result is that I want one.

The people who want 29ers will either search for them using a search-box, or look for the category. And the amazing thing is, this category now exists, in many more places than just one year ago.

I believe that, at least for things like bikes, supply creates no or very little demand - after all, the BMX category has been there forever, and yet I never felt tempted to buy a BMX bike. Or even a road bike, and you must admit there's plenty of supply there! (just to make this clear: I don't have any road specific bikes, only touring and MTB (I did buy a used road frame, which will become a very light singlespeed bike, but this definitely wasn't a result of supply))

There is the issue of promixity. the products has to be close enough or relevant enough to capture the attention of its intended audience. Although it is essentially biking, BMX and Road biking is considered as a different discipline. They require a different mentality, different type of interest etc. I am not saying that they are not related or that an individual would not be involved in all of these, but, there is enough distinction to stay away (not feel the supply induced demand) from the additional supply in the BMX or road bike market.
So, while your comparision is important its not exactly applicable.

I disagree. People (I am talking about the general mountain biking population) will not just casually search for 29er if there were no reference to it in the market. Do you think people are searching for a 36" wheel right now? if they are I am totally out of it man.
there is nothing (in my not so humble opinion) amazing about somethings mere existance. heck, poop exists. whats amazing about that?

Dirt Rag article on history of the "29er"... https://www.dirtragmag.com/print/arti...egory=features
I would be careful with words here. this is not a history, even the author's title says it as a story. My take on it is exactly that. its a story. There were very few factual references. Most of the comments were based on anecdotal personal conversation with like-minded individuals which may or may not be confirmed. The author also used very casual and probabilistic expressions (such as “I think” or “probably”) all through the article to make critical conclusions.
The piece is an interesting pass time read. and more of a nostalgic and subjective recollection of some past personal events. Does not necessarily prove one thing or the other?

Your subtle sophism is lost on me.

FWIW, Cannondale's 29er MTB lineup for 2007 had just one bike. Now, for 2008, they've got a range of four (all hardtails; no FS 29ers) with different drivetrain/component sets.

Pricepoints ...
From the enthusiast standpoint, we all love our 29ers and we won't go back. Want some reference go over to mtbr.com and check out the 29er forum. It is the most popular forum there.
From the manufacturers standpoint, I think they are merely interested in sales. When the "race hardtail" disappeared I think it made a whole in the spectrum of pricepoints in a companies lineup. The 29er has some unique attributes and it fits that "high end hardtail" entry quite well. You'll notice that very few companies ship 29ers with junk parts. The point of the excercise is to create a bike that sells for more money.
In the end only the consumer can tell if it's worth it. However, I believe that if 29ers were meritless they would have disappeared well before this point. It is not too early to say that 29ers are here to say. They have branched from being a singlespeed oriented offering to full blown medium travel trail bikes offered by pretty much EVERY large bike company. Perhaps 29ers will never completely dominate the XC market as I suspect. However, calling 29ers a fad is absoluetly ridiculous.

[QUOTE=sherpaPeak;5081964]According to Gary Fisher website “Pepperdine University found that 29inc wheels ride 6% faster on uphill courses...QUOTE]
That is a pretty agressive claim.
My little MTB group has a climb that we do. (Salzman from Hwy30 for you PDX folks) Good grade, middle ring stuff. Takes a good rider about 15 minutes.
Does this mean that if I went to a 29er, I could now smoke my buddies by almost a full minute?
The odds of that happening seem pretty slim.

There seem to be alot of 29ers in WV, most of which also sport lefty shocks; I know WV MTBers lead the nation in terms of "fad" bikes, but these riders seem happy!

There's a WV Big Wheel team... the Women's Pro winner of the Wilderness 100 was a WV lady on a 29er SS... she's featured in the '08 C'dale catalog, as id her husband (on the Men's 29er bike page)
