Intro and question...
Wow, this forum is intimidating. Its so big.
Well here it goes, I am a 22 year old Australian living in Park City, Utah during the summer. I have been riding road biked in Australia for a couple years now and just got into mountain biking up here in Park City last summer.
Well, renting bikes is becoming expensive since i find myself wanting to ride whenever i have an afternoon free. So my dad, being the generous man he is, offered to pay half of a bike on one condition: I build it from scratch
Now, working on bikes is not a foreign activity for me. In fact i built my road bike from the ground up as well, and my car...my dad is really into learning how things work and how to build things. He feels once you build a bike from scratch you have more respect for it. I agree with him 100%
So, MY QUESTION: How much do you think i should put away in order to build a bike?
What im looking for:
There are 3 mountains within 10 miles of my house. So I will be doing a GOOD deal of downhill riding. So i will need something that can handle the trials. But i will also be doing a good amount of climbing, being from a road biking background i enjoy a good hill climb. So lightness is somewhat of a factor. It will also need quality components. I want something that will last me a few years.
Anyone have an idea of how much a bike like this will cost?
Also, when is the best time to buy? I was thinking the winter season. One, because no one is really riding in the mountains AND because companies are coming out with 2008 gear soon and people will be wanting to sell their 07 gear for the new 08 gear.
Thanks so much, i know this post is long.

You should get some good advice here. When you get done digesting it, go down to Jan's and talk to Nate. He should be able to help you with some specifics that can be tracked down right in PC. Good luck.

Well, im gonna be working on it as i go. But all and all i wouldnt mind throwing in around 1500, and then my pops would throw in 1500 so all in all the bike will cost around $3000.

Welcome and what a pretty nice project you have.
$3000 sounds like a good budget. You'll get good feedback here. Unfortunately I am more XC oriented but will let some of the other riders here chime in.

3 g's is a nice round number.
I would build a nice 6x6 bike (or thereabouts) if I were in your situation. It would be light enough to climb decently, but stout enough to descend fearlessly.
