XC is specific, the trails arent as abusive to the bike, but instead the rider (long races)

trail riding is riding on a trail, may it be north shore trails, XC trails, etc.

Trail means that you might need some skill to overcome the terrain while cross country terrain tends to be more smooth then trails

It can depend on where you live/ride and who you talk to.

thats true, although in general, "XC trail" is more aggressive (meaning terrain and therefore bike) than just "XC"

Gee, and I thought when one rode on a trail in the country, from one point to another, or even back to the original point, that it was called cross country.
