building, need help

hey, i need help with a budget for my 2006 Norco Bigfoot build. im working on a parts list and first of all, i dont know how much i should spend. im 14, so i dont really have a job. im also Canadian. so if anyone can give me some advice. i dont care how much i spend really, id like to spend a minimum of $1500 though. im buying most stuff off jenson. i have my frame, bb, bars, stem, and headset, which totals at about $350. so any tips, tricks, or job ideas are welcome. also, a good budget. if you want a rough parts list, ive got one. thanks!

why don't you have a job at 14? is there some law in Canada prohibiting it?

As far as a budget goes, since you don't have a job, I would ask your mommy how much you can spend, and then we can take it from there.

post your parts list too

well if mom doesn't care, I would say we can set the budget at an even $3,000.

I second that.

Let's go 36 Van RC2, FR2350's, Sunline Stem, Brooks b17 saddle, Easton EC90 bars, Rohloff rear hub (pay your LBS to swap the rear 2350 hub for the Rohloff), Noir crankset with CB 50/50's, Solid gold lockon's, Avid Ultimates, and a Kenda SB8 2.1" front tire, and Kenda Nevegal 2.8" rear tire with Stan's goo in both.

That'll get ya started anyways.

Plus you should set aside some money for gloves, body armor and a full face, maybe like another $600.

And, since she is being so generous, have mom set herself up with something nice while she has the checkbook out. Maybe a day at the local spa or something.

Why are you getting an 8 speed cassette? Are your shifters 8 speed or 9? Also, a cut up tube will serve as a chain stay protector instead of spending more money on it. They work great, don't slip, and you should have a old tube sitting around.

+1

You have 9 speed shifters and and 8 speed cassette. They must match in order for your drivetrain to play nice. make sure and get a 9 speed chain if you get a 9 speed cassette.

you have listed a rapid rise (low normal) rear derailleur also. Make sure that is what you want. I have one and like it, but you may not.

Plus go hydros on the brakes and get a better wheelset

rapid rise? explain that please (and recommend a good shimano one)

im getting brakes the second order, so if i have enough, ill consider them (hydros)(already was)

wheelset, thats better than what came stock on the bike...

i think the shifters i looked at first were 8 spd, 9 it is then for the cassette

zumba, im not stupid, its a reversed spring, so instead of pushing the chain towards the granny gear with your thumb, the spring does the work, and when you shift to smaller cogs, you push the chain to the next cog. the spring does the hard work getting the chain to a lower gear (up to a bigger cog) hence the term, "rapid rise"

a deraileur wouldnt help you jump, so stop with this junk zumba, i do care about my money, i only spend it on bike parts, and i do care, but i was wondering if some nice people (unlike yourself) could help me with my build and budget.

rapid rise sounds cool, i currently have... slow rise?..., so do you think ill like it?

Any of the advice on my first post is as moronic as the rear shock on a HT advice from my 2nd.

Okay...so he's got a Shore HT frame...why would I in my right mind suggest Noir crankset with 50/50 pedals, Brooks saddle, carbon bars, a through the roof wheelset with instructions to pay some bonehead to tear the rear down and add a $1000 hub, goofy-light XC brakes, 2.1" Small Block 8 front mismatched with a 2.8" Nevegal rear (which BTW only goes up to a 2.7")???

You should go DJ 3 b/c the DJ 2 will only go up to 100mm travel.
I'd buy a Domain U-Turn on the cheap if I were on your budget.

Wheelset: Shimano XT Disc/Singletrack $145
Good wheelset if built buy a good builder. Don't do it yourself, man...just don't.

Front Tire: Kenda Small Block 8 (26 x 2.35) $34.99
Rear Tire: Kenda Small Block 8 (26 x 2.35) $34.99
BAD IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kenda SB8's are a cross country tire. You're building a Shore HT. Get some Nevegal's unless you're using the BF for Urban. Then get K-Rad's

Tubes: Panaracer Supertube – Double Thick $8 (x4)

Front Brake: Avid BB7 185mm ‘08 mechanical $64
Rear Brake: Avid BB7 185mm ’08 mechanical $64
BB7's are nice, but go 203mm frt and 185 rear

Brake Levers: Avid Speed Dial 7 $23 set
Crankset: Truvativ Hussefelt 175mm 24-32-RG $140
Bottom Bracket: Truvativ GigaPipe Team DH got it
Pedals: Sun/Ringle Zu-Zu $34.99 or Axiom (LBS)
Chain: SRAM PC-68 8SP $23
SRAM PC 950 9sp is where ya need to be.

Cassette: SRAM Powerglide PG-850 8SP 11-32 $21.98
SRAM PG950 9spd

Front Derailleur: Shimano LX FD-M580 Multi Clamp $30.99
Rear Derailleur: Shimano XT RD-M760 Medium Cage $64.99
Shifters: Shimano XT SL-M751 Rapidfire Shifters $63
Bars: Truvativ Hussefelt got it
Stem: Truvativ Hussefelt got it
Seat Post: Truvativ XR $22

Seat Clamp: Zion Alloy Seat Clamp with QR Lever $8.99
You mean like from "Zion bikes"? Get a Salsa Flip Lock
Headset: FSA the Pig got it
Nice

Headset Spacer: 10mm Alloy $2.50
Grips: ODI Ruffian Red $9 (grips) $11 (clamps)
I love mine.

Saddle: DMR Dirt Saddle $18.70
Cables: Jagwire Hyper Cable and Housing $12.98 (brakes) $12.98 (shifters)
Avid full metal jackets

Lizard Skins Frame Patch Kit $7
Lizard Skins Jumbo Chain Stay Protector $7

And ill mention im not stupid, so ill figure out if the parts are good anyway, or what i want
So far, you're planning on a Frankenbike. What do you plan to do with this bike?

If you're gonna "live to ride, ride to live" you need to build a bike that you can actually ride...so don't mix 8 and 9 speed drivetrain components, don't put a 100mm fork on a bike that was built for a longer one, don't buy Smallblock 8's unless you're just riding hardpack and not taking any hits, and don't build your own wheels unless you're a 14 y.o. prodigy.

Der's: Sure...XT's okay
Shifters: XT's alright there too
Cassette: PG950
Chain: PC950
Brakeset: Avid Code 5's
Stem, Bars: Sunline
Post: Mav Speedball, or GD

thanks for all the help. im a trials, urban/street, dj, and trail/shore rider. its hard to build one bike for it all, but i dont do much shore, and when i do its nothing big.

i just found out that child labour laws here say you can work once your 14 (did i mention that im 14?), as long as its not harmful and doesnt interupt school and all, so im going to try and find a part time job for the winter.

ill tell you im limiting myself to buying everything from jenson and my LBS, just to make it easier, and to save on shipping. if i can get a job, my budget will be around $3000 (depending on how much im making), if i cant, im thinking $2000.

im getting forks in january, so i guess i should spend extra money to get adjustable travel (budget alowing). im looking at the RockShox Pike. ive seen an urban rider use it, so i know it will work there. it adjusts from 95mm to 140mm, so thats all good. but then id also need a 20mm hub, so this all means if i dont have a job, i dont get it or i dont get it built for another summer. thats what it looks like it boils down too. should i wait if i cant work?

There is no reason to go above $1,500-$1,750 on this build is there?
