Skidding through corners

this is a PM interchange between me and some guy who likes to skid his fixed gear on trails.

Since my caps won't work let this thread convince him.

Skidding destroys trails and that means
1. someone has to fix them
2. the quality of them is lessened(even after they are fixed)
3.bikes get banned.

If you skid after knowing this you are a peice of **** who doesn't deserve to ride on trails.

Education of the issues at hand is necessary in a case like this, but do not allow the method of delivery become the focus of your post.

I believe you'll have better luck influencing this chap if you take a more diplomatic approach

Just a suggestion - you might want to define your terms a little more specifically, because right now you sound like another overbearing, narrow minded individual with a very limited realm of experience.

He is a fool.

I am sure he is not maintaining the trails (or has ever maintained trails).

Skidding corners is for pros in bike porn movies.

Edit: this guy is on a cyclocross bike so this post is in reference to non freeride type trails

Its been probably 20 years since I last thought skidding was fun.

I sometimes skid unintentionally, but for the most part try not to. Our local trails seem to erode so quickly anyway, it probably doesn't matter.. freakin' horses.

I believe the victim of the OP meant to say "drifting" through corners, not "drafting".

PM means "private message".

You should have asked permission before making this member's PM a public message.

Shame on you.

"I am going to post this message in the mtb forum. read that thread. If that doesn't convince you I hope you are never able to ride trails again."

If you're so gung-ho with the posting of private exchanges in-forum, why not post your notification response too? My favorite part was the end where you hoped I was never able to ride trails again. Am I the only one that wants to give dutret a pinch on the cheek and a pat on the head when he types in caps authoritatively? It borders on either really cute or really annoying. I'm not entirely sure which side of the fence he falls, but I figure he'll make it apparent shortly.

You don't know what trails I ride, the make-up of said trails, or really anything at all about me besides the fact that I occasionally ride trails fixed and even (less occasionally) brakeless. Thanks for deciding to be a dick anyways, it's already given me several smiles this morning and it's not even 10 o'clock yet.

If you were better able to articulate your position, perhaps I would be inclined to do so. You catch more flies with honey, etc.

Honestly lowcel I don't mind my message being part of this thread. If dutret wants to display his character by posting my private message to him in the manner he did let him, I have nothing to hide.

What do I have to know? Are they on land you own or do you pay to tear them up? By trail do you mean logging road? With those exceptions there is no excuse for ever intentionally skidding once you have been told otherwise.

I've been doing this long enough that I've seen plenty of trails get closed to bikes or so erroded that they had to be moved. I therefore would rather see someone never ride off road then contribute to these problems.

private as far as the guidlines mention and standard practice in no way requires that the confidentiality be maintained. It purely means that the subject matter is privately sent from one individual to another rather then posted in a forum. If lowcel or another mod wants to interpet it that way fine but I don't see how bike forums gains anything by requiring that pms be kept confidential. He either believes what he wrote to me privately and should be able to defend it in public or he doesn't.

Apparently it's perfectly fine so I am mystified as to why this thread has been edited.
Honestly I don't care. I wouldn't do it to anyone else out of basic courtesy (save in response as I did above) but I understand not everyone conducts themselves similarly. Here's my response to Dutrets first message (which was edited out above):

"I CAN ride trails without skidding, but it's just so much more fun to skid around occasionally. I've got a fixed/free cyclocross bike that I ride trails on also, but drifting corners is just too much fun to stop. I remain unconvinced by your caps."

Edit: Fixed the spelling error mentioned above (drafting/drifting) for clarity.

I fully explained myself to another forum member who in essence said the same thing as dutret in a PM but did so in a more classy way so as not to come off as a complete dick. Call me crazy but I just don't feel the urge to dignify dutret with an informative response to his authoritative declaration. Too bad you can't capitalize CAPS, maybe then he could get even MORE indignant about it.

Private messages are intended to be just that, private. I'm really not sure what is so hard to understand about the word "private".

What is the point of having private messages if one of the people are just going to post them in a public forum?

I normally I wouldn't post a PM in a public forum, but don't tell me to **** off in private and expect it to stay that way. You don't deserve any respect from me, so don't demand it.

I'm really not sure you know what that word means. How does posting a PM make my a hypocrite? I didn't delete anyone's re-posted PMs. Besides, it's not against forum guidelines as far as I can tell other than the fact that it isn't very polite. It might be rude and therefore not generally appropriate, but you threw politeness out the window with your PM. I don't remember anyone agreeing that my post in the other thread was in violation of the forum guidelines, so again, I don't see how that made me a hypocrite either.

Anyway, I'm done with this thread. Don't bother PMing me either cause I won't read it.

Private does not necessarily mean confidential. The message is private because it is initially accessible only to the person who it is sent to rather then public posted in a thread. That has nothing to do with confidentiality of the information contained. Most boards have PMs yet none that I know of have a confidentiality policy. This board doesn't even have an official one as far as I can tell.

1. For forum members to communicate with each other about topics that don't involve the forum as a whole.
For instance "Want to meet at 7:30 instead of 8:00"?

2. To send a user information that you want to make sure they get. For instance instead of merely posting to the thread in which livewire posted about his love for skidding on trails I also sent him a pm that I could be more sure he would read. Likewise I did the same when I reposted his PM here.

More importantly though it's just common practice.

My own perspective is to not have any expectation of what a stranger receiving information in a PM might choose to do with it. Quite frankly, aside from the persona that each user creates through their posts and responses, I don't know what anyone is like in their day to day lives. So, how can I expect that they will use information given to them in the same way I would use it? I can't.

For what it's worth, I see Pete's point. It is difficult to understand what the "rules" are when the moderators don't regulate with consistency. What guidelines are provided when one becomes a moderator? Or is it all personal preference?
