new XT cassette/crankset ??
 

I've been having a blast getting daily use out of my new Shimano XT Dual Control shifter/brake levers. but the thing is:

I'm still using my 8sp cassette.
I'd like to get full use of my 9sp shifters.

I've already consulted mtbr.com so now I am looking for your original, experience-based thoughts on the following question.

Are there any reasons to not buy the Shimano DEORE XT CS-M760 9 Speed Cassette? (I'm thinking the 11-32)

and how about the crankset to match it?

Good God, man, what the feck are you waiting for? Yes! And the friggin' crank, too.

Holy clusters, Batman, an 8 sp cogset does not work well with 9 sp shifters. In fact, some would say it doesn't work at all.

If cost is an issue, the LX is the same crank as the XT with steel instead of aluminum rings.

and some would say (I would say) that for the past month they've been working fine, even, perfectly. I have no explanation for this. thanks for the response tho +]

This is blatantly untrue.

The only steel ring on the LX is the inner chain ring. Other than that, the axle is much less hollowed-out than the XT axle, and the overall design is completely different. Not to mention the 67 gram weight difference. There are no shared parts with the XT crank...

The Hone crank is the same as the LX crank, except for color.

This too is blatently untrue. The Hone 3 ring is different than the Hone 2 ring...not just the same crank with a bash ring.

The Hone 2 ring has a spindle that looks like the XT or Saint spindle. The 3 ring version appears like the LX. The 2 ring version has steel pedal inserts like the Saint. The LX does not. (the picture below shows two Saints and a Hone 2 ring...the Saint next tot he Hone doesn't have the steel washers "in the picture" like the Hone 2 and the upper-left Saint picture, both Saint and Hone 2 have a steel insert from the inside with a steel washer on the outside ) The 3 and 2 ring versions have XT rings...22steel, 32alu, and 44alu/bash ring.

Also notice the spider on the LX vs. the Hone 3 ring. It's reversed...looks almost like the XT spider. So, the Hone 3 is like the LX with XT rings and XT spider. The Hone 2 is like LX arms with Saint pedal inserts, XT or Saint spindle, XT'ish spider, XT rings...basically a Mutt.

So it seems that Shimano has a few basic legos that they can press together in a number of ways.

Any other info on what $100 buys a guy in functional differences XT vs. LX other than 67 grams.

So, what you are saying is that Sram X9 triggers works fine with 8speed cassette (Sram, Shimano?)? If you are able, give more info so I CAN get a clue. Also, my impression also was that Shimano 8 and 9 would not work entirely well together, due to slightly different cog spacing. Please correct me if I'm wrong or qualify more, I'm all ears.

I was referring to the 3-ring version, as the discussion was about the XT crank. Which basically is the LX crank. With LX rings: look at the pics you posted, the outer ring has the same design as the LX, the other two rings are black LX rings . I never noticed the XT spider though, thanks for pointing that out. Both cranks are the same weight too (the Hone is 1 gram heavier).

XT M760 is old. If you haven't got it, you might as well go with XT M770 series.

That doesn't work! You can't use 9 spd shifter pods on a 8 spd cassette.

I suggest you get a complete NEW XT M770 series. In Canada, I can get it at $500 CAD (USD) for a complete kit (crank, BB, rear der, shifters)

i can and have been using 9spd shifters with 8 spd cassette. the only gap in the system is that i can't shift up past my 8th gear. this is because i have no gear past my 8th gear. just trust me on this one. it works. i just think it would be interesting to have a 9th gear.

also, as an update to this thread, i just purchased the 760 cassette and now it's just a matter of picking up the crankset, but DAMN do I not want to pay over 200 bucks for it. any advice?

Because once you've gone External BB...there's no going back. (for myself anyway)

N'uther good reason to skip the LX and go Hone.:D
