new XT cassette/crankset ??
I've been having a blast getting daily use out of my new Shimano XT Dual Control shifter/brake levers. but the thing is:
I'm still using my 8sp cassette. I'd like to get full use of my 9sp shifters. I've already consulted mtbr.com so now I am looking for your original, experience-based thoughts on the following question. Are there any reasons to not buy the Shimano DEORE XT CS-M760 9 Speed Cassette? (I'm thinking the 11-32) and how about the crankset to match it? thanks! |

Holy clusters, Batman, an 8 sp cogset does not work well with 9 sp shifters. In fact, some would say it doesn't work at all. |
If cost is an issue, the LX is the same crank as the XT with steel instead of aluminum rings.

The only steel ring on the LX is the inner chain ring. Other than that, the axle is much less hollowed-out than the XT axle, and the overall design is completely different. Not to mention the 67 gram weight difference. There are no shared parts with the XT crank... The Hone crank is the same as the LX crank, except for color. |

Interesting. Thanks for the lesson. The arms looked very similar at first blush.
So it seems that Shimano has a few basic legos that they can press together in a number of ways. Any other info on what $100 buys a guy in functional differences XT vs. LX other than 67 grams. -Z |

XT M760 is old. If you haven't got it, you might as well go with XT M770 series.
Note: I'm still using my 8sp cassette. I'd like to get full use of my 9sp shifters. I suggest you get a complete NEW XT M770 series. In Canada, I can get it at $500 CAD (USD) for a complete kit (crank, BB, rear der, shifters) |
