Eggbeater Models
So I've been considering moving to clipless, mostly because of the holes in my shin. I really like the eggbeater design. They're simple, 4 sided, and it appears that they have many fans. I was looking on jenson for the eggbeaters, and I was wondering what the differences are in the different models. I know they make them from different materials, but what practical application does that make?
So I can get the MXR for $50, C for $70, or the SL for $110. I'm only willing to go as high as the SL.
That plus around $100 on shoes makes the whole thing a maximum of $210 investment.
Also, on a sidenote, how are eggbeaters as a first clipless? I know you can change the angle 15/20 with the cleats. It seems as though it has less adjustments than the other ones? How does this work out? The lack of an actual platform scares me but I figure if I'm going to go, I might as well go all the way.
EDIT: found SLs for $80 at pricepoint

Stop.
Your opinion is of no use, the eggbeaters that Benli is mentioning are bicycle pedals, not a cooking utensil.

It didn't make me laugh. Considering your incorrect use of punctuation and grammar, I could not take this so called joke as humorous. I just thought it was your ignorance speaking.

much help yourself trekbikedude? or is that just a part of your daily go-around and correct people.
eggbeaters, it depends on what you ride.
acid if you're all mountain-ing
mallet if you're dh-ing
eggbeater if you're xc-ing...
at least thats for the most part. some people would rather mix them up.

Only MulletArgyleman, he constantly posts useless information and I'm getting rather annoyed by it.

I think the MXR is the non-rebuildable model that is meant to be quasi-disposable. The C has a chromoly spindle and the SL is stainless steel.
I use and like Eggbeaters as both the pure Eggbeater and the Candy variant. I will tell you what I DON'T like about them so that you're aware of the negatives.
- The cleats wear out like crazy. Apparently there is a longer-lasting cleat but they are very soft and wear out quickly.
- Once the cleat starts wearing out you get a crazy amount of float and have to remedy this by changing the cleats. I think it's about $20/pair. Just last week I had one foot actually popping out because of how worn out the cleat was.
- The cleat can get hindered by the tread pattern on some shoes. On my specialized shoes I had to grind away a little on the tread so that I could easily clip in.
So, there are the negatives. Nothing that can't be overcome.
EDIT: I forgot to state that I have an older C Eggbeater pair. A recent SL Candy pair and a pair of Smarties, which are equivalent to the MXR. I haven't had problems with any but I use the Smarties for family rides and grocery shopping.

At least that way you won't be drooling with complaints all over your (I'm assuming) computer screen.

I would suggest that you sit down at a huge television screen that does not support VGA input or is not connected to a computer, so you do not have access to the internet to post lame insults.

I got this combo. The pedals work great, the shoes are a bit on the narrow side but fine otherwise.

I think eggbeaters are a good first-timer pedal. Easy to get in and out of, decent price, great longevity and durability, and they clear mud very well. The Candy version would be an even better choice, in my opinion, because the platform allows you to still pedal well even if you can't get clipped in right away.
I've never used the straight up Eggbeaters, but I use the Candy on my hardtail and my rigid singlespeed, and I use the Crank Bros Quattro on my road bike. I've tried other road and mtb pedal systems, but have decided to stick with Crank Bros for the long haul.
Get the SL, since the price difference from the C is negligible.

If I am interpreting correcting from various threads, float means how much your foot can go off the pedals right? How much float is good? The float I think is non adjustable on the Eggbeaters, is the float already available okay? How do you like your SL compared to the C? Compared to the Smarties?
When the cleats start wearing down, they get rounded and you can rotate more before getting to a point you can unclip. In the worst cases, there is so much play that under hard pedaling I have had my foot pop out.
The solution to this is to get new cleats.
I find no difference between the SL and C pedals. I have gone back to putting the Candy SLs on my full suspension mountain bike and use my Eggbeater Cs on my road bike. I used to have the Eggbeaters on my mountain bike but kept swapping my pedals around and for some reason now have settled on this.
I use the Smarties on my family/commuter hardtail but I don't really use it under harsh conditions. I basically looked for the cheapest Crank Brother pedals to put that bike. I was hoping to buy a set of used Mallets as I think the bigger platform would work better for what I use that bike for but never really came across any.
I like the mini platform offered by the Smarty/Candy pedal but find it slightly easier to get into the plain Eggbeaters.
If I were to buy a set of Eggbeaters today I'd probably buy the SLs. I have seen Eggbeaters that have failed. The wings snap. I suspect that the C would be more brittle than the SL wings but I'm not a materials engineer to truly comment on this aspect. My gut feeling is that the SLs are more durable.

That 15-20 degrees is really release angle...but I do get what you are saying. Eggbeaters have 6 degrees of float according to the manufacturer.

Ah yes - the 6 degrees are free. Beyond that you have to put some effort to get to the release angle. With worn cleats the whole thing just starts feeling sloppy.

I may be thinking of SPD but I seem to recall something about adjusting float on beaters by installing them flip flopped. I have both( don't use the SPD anymore) and it's been awhile since I've read the instructions so this might be incorrect, I can't remember 100%. Anyone got a booklet handy to double check this?
