Made a $130 mistake today.

Bent my xtr deraillieur at the jockey pulley arm going into a rock garden. The hanger ironically, is perfectly straight.

Oops, oh well.

Straightened it enough to get back to the trail head. So now it's time to see if I will like the XT shadow deraillieur. Am a bit skeptical about it still, but will give it a try.

Yes it is further in towards the wheel, but I don't notice any difference in vertical clearance. Which is probably not that big of a concern.

Rocks KNOW who's running the foo-foo stuff and move. The more high-end metal parts in the derailleur, the more it disturbs the natural, ambient magnetic field and they shift position.

Not it was rider error. I screwed up, and broke a part because of it. Not making any excuses about it.

Will need a longer than 20 minute ride to get an idea if it was an upgrade.

Vertical clearance is increased by using a shorter caged derailleur...why do people continue to think the Shadow gives them more vertical clearance? It's intended to give it more lateral clearance.

Oh well...at least now we can get 1 more opinion on the Shadow I guess.

BTW...I still think your bike is one of the slickest looking trail bikes on the market. Everything is so compact like it sprawls out from a center fulcrum...small triangles etc...

I knew it didn't have anything to do with vertical, was just answering myself from a post a few weeks ago.

That sucks Mr.Smashy but I saw good reviews on the XT shadow. It has a good design. You like the dropkick Murphy's? I saw them in concert and also flogging molly they are awesome!!!

I don't know why they don't make those pulley cages replaceable. I fragged a deraileur myself (bent hanger, didn't know, jockey pulley cage got caught on a spoke and tore open). It seems to me that that's the common part of the deraileur to get trashed. I just wish I could've replaced it without having to replace the whole deraleur.

Instead, it would have been a $230 mistake.

Ok, the write up.

Set up was fairly easy. It shifted like a deraillieur, and I'm going to do further repairs to the xtr deraillieur that I had on it and put it back on, don't like the shadow deraillieur.

Amen to that.
Going slow (some of us DHers - the shi7 ones - do that), its terrible shifting, but once you get going, i dont mind it. Youre just too fussy Smashy
