Has this ever happend to anyone (knee injury)

I posted this on another forum http://training.fitness.com/injuries...ury-29056.html

A few weeks ago I wrecked my bike and could not get unclipped from my pedals. I banged my knee on the top tube and it has felt bruised ever since. The inner part of my knee (tibia I would say) is sensitive and feels like a deep bruise but I see no evidence. It was yellow green a few days afterward but looks normal now. It hurts when I do activities that involve running. Is it possible for a bruise to take over 2 weeks to heel?

It kind of achs when I run but there is no pain when I stand. I was able to ride my bike today with out problems. If I press on it with my fingers or bang my knees together it hurts as if I were hiting a bruise. I guess the pain has gotten better because I had to take some Ibuprophen (sp?) a few days that first week so I could get through a couple days of teaching PE.

*Edit* pressing on it does nothing but if I smack it with my finger tips it hurts. I pressed on it and tried to find the spot and nothing but if I smack it it hurts.

im no doctor so dont quote me on this but in most cases if its getting better, it will heal. if it ever bothers you take ibeprophen its the best for that sort of injury. good luck with healing, if it stops healing or the healing starts decreasing and your knee gets worse id suggest seeing a doctor.

ibuprofen is an antiinflammatory. It reduces the swelling in injuries, thus reducing the pain and actually helping it heal because it allows for increased bloodflow.

Sounds like a bruise to the bone or very slight fracture but without x-rays or an MRI I could not tell ya. If it does not get better in a few days go see a Dr.

And just to clear things up, a good stiff shot of cortisone would work the best.

To the OP, if you damaged the bone, it may take a wee bit longer to heal. If it hurts to run, then don't run. Biking is much better than running. If you have decent health insurance, go see a doctor and maybe get an x-ray to see if there is a hairline fracture or some other damage. If you have crappy coverage, take 4 aspirin and a double gin & tonic [with lime]. And stop running.

I love it when people ask for medical advice on a mountain bike forum. Here's my fix: Wrap your body in cellophane, wear a tin foil hat on your head, cook a lasagna and drink a pitcher of margarita mix with no alcohol. Do all of this while reading The Catcher in the Rye backwards in a mirror while sitting under a table.

Just make sure to pay for your copy of The Catcher in the Rye in cash.

If a copy can be found in Arabic, it works best.

is this possible?

if you have it backwards then read it in a mirror isn't that just like reading it forwards?

No, you are reading backwards text backwards. Two 'wrongs' don't make a 'right.'

And, no, if you do it, it WON'T give you a message about John Lennon.

True, but three rights make a left. Ha-HA!

I guarantee that while you try it, you'll find yourself not noticing a painful knee anymore.

Argh, I tried it and tripped because the cellophane was too tight poked myself in the eye with the foil hat and cut my other knee with the mirror. On top of that I choked on the pitcher and caught my table on fire trying to cook the lasagna under it:o

Not a doctor, seek professional oppinon, proceed at your own risk, yadda yadda. If it were me and it was slowly getting better I'd just let it be and baby it a bit. Yes, it can take two weeks or more for an injury like that to heal. Try icing it to see if that brings the pain level down. Ibuprofin can also work well for the pain. I suspect it's just a little swelling. There are lots of weird nerves, ligaments, etc in there and those can be painful in weird ways and react differently to swelling.

There is no swelling and I am no stranger to injury so I really am not too worried about it. I guess another question I was thinking of but forgot to ask is would this be an indicator that my bike is to big? I have an 18" and am approx 5'10". The Giant (I know that they are designed for big people Pete ;) ) that I rented at Wisp last month was a 16 inch and felt small at first but after a while I got used to it. I am wandering if I decided to get a new bike next year if I should go with a smaller size. I was 14 years old when I got my GT and I think they planned on me getting taller and I didn't. I am hoping to get a FSR Comp and if I do I will get fitted. I like the price on those Motosomthins' that I have been seeing on here and if I go that rt. I would not be fitted.

I don't think banging your knee on the top tube while falling is necessarily an indicator that the frame is the wrong size. If you were banging your knee in to your handlebars while pedaling that would be another matter. :)

ryancx 11-13-07 02:00 PM

That happened to ME!

Hey just to put something in, I am a high-school cross-country runner and love mtn biking too. Just to say, about 3 or 4 weeks ago I drove my knee right into my handlebars climbing a steep hill (my rear wheel lost traction). I have no evidence of a bruise either but it hurts me to run, especially when I am getting through the first mile. But it is getting better. I think that like most injuries a bruise on the knee should go away with time, although slower than normal. I can now run a few miles without feeling any significant pain. GOOD LUCK!

ryancx 11-13-07 02:02 PM

My problem has to do with my knee hitting the handlebar, however. My bike is too small, but I just don't want to give it up. I have a Jamis dakar sport, and love it. Good luck with your injury, Chris.

I guess mine is just set up different than the newer bikes. I have noticed that many new bikes have a declining top tube (slants towards the seat) where my top tube does not. If anything there is a slight decline towards the handle bars. My knees were never near the top tube on the Gaint I rode @ Wisp

I didn't think I had to mention the 6 buckets of "safety water". Geez. Newbs.

i'm 5'10 as well an 18 inch giant is probably the right size. if the reach is too much put on a shorter stem. I like the handling of a shorter stem your milage may vary.. I ride a 19.5 inch trek the reach is about the same as the 18 inch giant I tested.. standover is kind of tight, but standover is overrated.
