Poisonous material: Shimano recalls gloves

Shimano recalls gloves, because they contain too much benzidine. Affected are Shimano gloves off the PRO, SHIMANO and SAINT brands, which have been manufactured in Pakistan.
Benzidine is a known human carcinogen.

Don't run red lights, wear a helmet, use hand signals, get some cycle lights(front and rear) and, FFS, don't run red lights!

- interesting... no mention on CPSC site (last Shimano recall was the 2006 skewer recall)...

- but for our Euro friends, it appears one should avoid sticking fingers into the PRO, SHIMANO and SAINT brands of gloves!

Yes. It's common knowledge that the Japanese do not like the Germans. Boy, I thought everyone knew that.

Nah, we north americans get toys with lead paint.

But can say I have never seen any Shimano riding gloves though.

The US could stand to take a cue from the EU and many European countries on issues concerning health and the environment. There's some unconscionable things going on here, in my own opinion.

LOL, Doug.

Seriously, in many ways the situation in Europe is quite dire. Lots of people and industry crammed into very small land area, some extremely polluted. They are realizing that they must act in a timely way or they'll all be waking up with orange hair.

Now, if it were benzedrine it may prove to be a real bonus, especially for racing.

Ahem...don't go into a panic or a tizzy-fit just yet. It's a good thing Shimano is being proactive about this and by all means, take advantage of it, but keep a few things in perspective:

1.) We have no idea what the dose is beyond "The material the gloves are made of contains too much Benzidine."

2.) Just about everything is a carcinogen. In the same list that the American Cancer Society calls out benzidine as a carcinogen, they also list cadmium (batteries), formaldahyde, quartz, lighter fluid, alcoholic beverages, wood dust, and sunlight. It's good to minimize exposure, but again, we don't know the dose, and the risk is probably far greater just from sunlight alone.

3.) Benzidine is a powder. Cancer risk was established only in the case of ingestion. The gloves probably don't taste very good anyways.

I beg to differ.
What we have here is a man who has obviously never hoed into a good quality glove before.
