Newbie looking to buy his first bike
HEY HEY HEY
This is properly the subject of a million threads but here goes:
I am looking to buy my first bike and really dont know where to start its all pretty confusing i basically want a bike i can get to college with everyday as well as tear it up on the weekends and have some fun.
Since i am a student my budget aint that great i am looking around the $600 mark (I know i am broke)
ANY INFO OR ADVICE OR GENERAL THOUGHTS WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

600 bucks will get you a decent hardtail MTB. I would suggest buying from a good LBS who will take care of you. DO NOT go to a big box retailer.
Where are you located? Someone here may be able to recommend a good shop. There are a ton of great bikes available from the major companies, so don't fret about the 'right' bike or the 'best' bike.
Spend a little more time reading, spend some time in more than one LBS, and you will have educated yourself enough to make your own decision.

bikes get tore up in college. Professional bike thieves also target college. I would seriously get a junk old used bike to use around campus and to get to and fro. It might and probably get kicked over, knocked over, rained on, etc.

+1, I outfitted my son with an old Trek 800. New tires and tubes, waxed the frame and put plenty of chain lube on it. I replaced all the quick release with non-QR axles with nuts. Great old bike and as long as it's locked, the theives can't be bothered.
