What goes in your back pack?

When you go out for a ride (couple of hrs), what do you pack with you? Im going for a ride this weekend, (first one in a LONG time) and im not sure what im going to need.

mindbogger 09-07-03 06:50 PM

i bring lots of water, tubes, mini pump, allen wrenches, philips and flat head screw driver, tire levers and zip ties!

i htink that zip ties are the most useful thing that has ever been invented

khuon 09-07-03 07:08 PM

Distributed between Camelbak MULE and pockets, I bring:
  • 100 oz. hydration bladder
  • Topeak minipump (with patchkit in handle)
  • spare tubes
  • Topeak Alien minitool
  • two spare 9V batteries for my shocks (K2 SmartShocks)
  • digital camera (Minolta DiMage X)
  • spare battery for my digital camera
  • mini-tripod for digital camera
  • wallet (actually just the insert with ID, $20 cash and a couple of credit cards)
  • clear lenses for my sunglasses or smoke lenses if I have the clear ones already in place
  • mini first aid kit (First Aid Only FA-112)
  • small bottle of lube
  • couple of spare spokes
  • replacement spare der. hanger
  • couple of spare links for my chain (SRAM)
  • a couple of zip-ties
  • small roll of electrical tape
  • small roll of toilet paper in plastic ziploc bag
  • mobile phone (Nokia 8260)

Sometimes I'll also strap a Tyvek cycling rainjacket (or something heavier/warmer) to the bungee if the weather looks questionable.

I've got a big ass camelbak, but I don't really go too crazy with carrying lots of junk unless it's an epic ride, or there's a chance I could be stranded in the wilderness in unforgiving conditions overnight.

I carry:

A waterproof windbreaker
An awesome Crank Brothers multitool
Tire levers
A CO2 inflator and a backup mini-pump
Usually some energy gells
My phone depending on which trails I'm riding
A tube and patch kit
5 bucks that I leave in the Camelbak in case I have to buy a tube from somebody on the trail, or just need some emergency cash.

Stubacca 09-08-03 08:51 AM

Much the same here... usually:
  • 100oz hydration bladder
  • a couple of energy bars
  • spare tube or 2
  • adhesive patch kit
  • mini pump
  • tire levers
  • crank brothers multi tool
  • mobile phone
  • ID + a little bit of cash
  • small first aid kit
  • windbreaker
  • small roll of TP
  • electrical tape & zip ties

Sometimes I take along the digital camera and compact tripod, but I usually won't do this on the first ride (I like to get to know the trail first before I lug along the extra weight!)

If it's a really long ride, I'll throw in a few spare parts.

mightypudge 09-08-03 08:59 AM

Most of my rides are 2-3 hours. I bring a 3-liter Camelbak and fill it up with ice water. I also bring the following goodies:
  • two tubes
  • multitool
  • tire levers
  • rag (for cleaning excess mud off bike or cleaning chain)
  • teflon lube
  • snacks
  • pliers (in case I bend another tooth on my chainring
  • hand towel (those stream crossings come in handy)
  • cell phone
  • wallet

I also bring a 24 oz. insulated bottle filled with Gatorade. Just plain water gets boring after a while.

I'm also going to start carrying some zip ties and electrical tape for no other reason than because it seems a lot of people do and probably for a good reason. Hopefully I'll never find out why. :)

MixedRider 09-08-03 11:42 AM

Hmmm... everyone neglected to mention sunscreen. I did too but I do carry a small squeeze tube of Coppertone Sport (SPF48).

But trust me on the sunscreen...

Have it here too... it's in the homemade first aid kit!

copper RS 09-09-03 12:00 AM

mini pump
cell phone
2 tubes
patch kit
allen set
100oz water in camel back
tire guage (if its not in my pack i'll lose it)
tire levers
$10
wallet
car keys

a2psyklnut 09-09-03 08:46 AM

Pretty much what everyone else listed, but I do take along some duct tape. I have a black Thomson seatpost, and some black duct tape. I put about 6 or 7 wraps of duct tape around the post. You barely see it and it's right there if you need it.

Just for grins, here's what I carry:

Spoke Wrench
Chain Tool
Full Set of allen wrenches
Multi-Tool with Pliers and a knife.
Spare chain links
Spare crank bolt
Spare tube
Patch Kit
6 or so zip ties
Mini-pump
Triple Anitbiotic
Some Food
Camera
Car Keys

I don't carry Toilet Paper unless I ride with my wife. Most of the places I ride have a bathroom at the trailhead, so I "go-go" before we leave. I just water the bushes if I have to "go".

I bet that beer gets pretty shook up and warm in your backpack.

yum...

Transparent 09-13-03 12:46 PM

Phone
Allen keys
Bit of money
Pump
puncture repair kit
Sunscreen
2 boost guaranas :D
2 spoons to use as tire levers

MandansFinest 09-13-03 01:08 PM

I have a M.U.L.E. and I cant fit a WHOLE lot of stuff in there when I have a full bladder. When I went to the Maah Daah Hey I think I took a mini-pump, bottle of slime, hex keys, a extra water bottle, and had a little room left over but not much.

mindbogger 09-13-03 01:30 PM

doesn't your back ache after a full day of riding with all that on your back?

Nic 09-13-03 03:27 PM

Bug stuff.

Scooby Snax 09-13-03 06:33 PM

2l water
minitool
1 tube
patch kit
mini pump
6' duct tape wraped round the barel of the pump
2 tire levers
1 gel now its a cliff shot mocha mocha
cell phone
house keys
rubber gloves
2 shoe laces
1 quarter just in case I crash and break the cell phone
spare bite valve for the drink hose
1 carabiner
sometimes a little led headlight or my headlamp

I like some of the other suggestions, spokes are a great idea, I think Im going to get one of those emergency spokes, but now that I have disk brakes, its not as critical... or is it... what am I saying?!! ok Im getting one.

browndog 09-15-03 10:31 AM

Seems like a lot of people take a quarter along for an emergency pay phone call. Aren't pay phone 35 cents now?

killerasp 09-17-03 12:13 AM

And all this stuff fits in your camel back? or do you all have one of those granny style bick racks on the tail of your bike? :D :D

sm266 09-20-03 06:19 PM

1 gatorade in bottle cage

In my hydration pack:
