Dogs and Riding in the Winter
 

I did a quick search and found some good info about riding with dogs, but nothing addressed winter conditions. For those of you who ride with your dog, what do you do about the cold? Coats? Booties? Nothing? I don't plan on being out for too long at a time, maybe an 1 - 1.5 hours at most.

Check out the dog thread at Telemarktips - lots of people go skiing with their dogs with no special clothing or booties for the dogs (there're arguments on whether dogs should have avi beacons though).

Well, as an Alaska Weather Veteran LOL
ive experienced negative 75 at the coldest.

I have a german shepard and he loved the cold.
negative 75 was a bit cold, and he didnt stay out long, but around the 0-15 degree area we just let him go outside.
we used him to pull a sled for fun. lol.

He didnt need booties or anything,
what type of dog do you have?
what are the temp and ground like?
the worst we had happen is the ice cut my dogs paw pads up, but it healed quickly

Yeah I think so. Last year his pads got cut up pretty bad too. I'm more worried about frostbite that anything. Last year he somehow impaled himself on a stick or something, right under his back legs. It didn't phase him one bit, at least not until we got back inside and he relaxed. Cost me ~$500 for the stitches too.

I'm just worried I wouldn't notice him getting too cold or something, but I guess I just have to pay closer attention.

Well If he starts to shiver, look unhappy, or move slower/fatigue like symtoms then you know the cold is getting to him.
if he starts to limp or favor certian paws then you might want to check that out.
Id say he should be fine, but if your really worried you could get some booties to protect his paws.

i wouldnt go as far as a little jacket, just cause they llook weird, and marley should have the winter fur by now lol
