How to haul your bike?

I am looking for the best way to haul my bike to and from different locations. I own a pickup and the idea of just putting my bike in the bed is not sitting well with me, How does everyone haul there bikes?

Is your truck a newer model or older? Not that I think it really matters, but I would invest in a back rack of some sort made for truck beds. I have an Ford Escape so my bike fits right inside. I do have to remover the front wheel but its perfect. :)

It's actually a new 08 Nissan

. . . or a pair of motorcycle tie-downs. Simple. Cheap. Effective.

I have a 07 Tacoma with bed rails and this works great (think it works with new Nissans too)

$50: http://www.orsracksdirect.com/rocky-...bike-rack.html

Only problem is you have to figure out what to do with the front wheel, which is tricky because I have a standard cab (2 seater)

It locks, holds the bikes firm, cheap, and is super easy to use. I would definitely recommend it.

Besides, of course, the fact that you have to remove the front wheel in the first place.

I wouldn't really consider it a hassle. Plus it keeps the bike rock solid in there. No worrying about it sliding back and forth in the bed or bouncing up when I've got the truck in 4-wheel and heading to the trail head.

If you have a pickup and Nissan still has the slots in the bedliner for a 2x6 all I did was take a 2.6 and another 2x6 and made an L. Slipped it into the slots. Driled some fork mounts into the to piece and drove all over the place with upto 4 bikes in there.

You either have never tried the tailgate method or you drive like Ivan Stewart. The bikes are surprisingly secure. I guess you could throw a bungee over them for peace of mind, although I never have. Loading and unloading is done from ground level and is much quicker. And there's room for 7 bikes in a Tacoma with space in the front of the bed for humans, dogs, or gear.

Occams Razor ftw.

I drive like an old lady, but I have to take Highways to trail heads sometimes. I also typically go alone so one bike with the tailgate method doesn't work so well as when there are more then one bike they hold each other stable.

Not true based upon my experience. We do lots of highway trips with three bikes on the tailgate, none of them touching. They stay put.

Maybe I missed the reason but why not put the bike in the bed? If your concern in laying it on it's side then use tiedowns as if it was a moto and if you need to lock it then run a cable through the bike from one anchor in the bed to the other.

Thats cool, even with a mat my one slides around like a bat out of hell :( . Plus I can lock it which is nice for quick trips into the store for nourishment.

Well the main reason I am concerned is with the bike getting beat to H3LL while driving. Plus I like to have things secured. Your idea of strapping it down like a Moto actually would work, and I like the lock idea.

Great idea! Then all you have to do is take your front seat out to tote your bike around...
