If your smarties are in good shape, sell em for 25 bucks and you are halfway to a new set of egg beaters.

I have them as my first venture into clipless. I like 'em. Why would you want the platform off?

I have one pair of Eggbeaters and they are great. I bought a pair of Smarty pedals for my other bike and they were a big disappointment. In fact, they only lasted about 4 months before the right pedal seized up.
I should have checked the reviews first:

Yeah, I read those reviews after I put the pedals on the bike. I still think they're fine for me. They have been some good (cheap) clipless pedals for me to learn. I'll get eggbeaters next time I need pedals, but I haven't had any problems.
