Yet it doesn't give any figures to go along with that feature explanation. I'm not saying that there isn't any, but the added torque load obviously isn't a major issue as I've yet to see anybody come in here after their disc brakes ripped all of their spokes from their rims.

Gonna try koolstops or something in the meantime.
yes very tempting & i was too impatient so now 717 set + LX disc - slap it on there!

don't be too proud to go lower down from XTR! when you look at brakes & mechs, it's just pulling some cable or pumping pistons*. i think my LX wheels + discs were £200... & they is handbuilt... Merlin rule

I hear that, but I'm just too damn proud ;p
The only thing I don't like about the package I mentioned is that there aren't any rim/spoke options (prefer DT4.2's/DT comp DB having lost a little faith in 717's after dinging mine fairly effortlessly)
I do spend a lot of time on the road so I might just get this package and relegate the wheels to road duty in a few months when I hope to pick up a ProII/DT4.2 set for the dirt.
Considering what an absolute ******* my conti slicks are to get on & off, it might actually be worth a second set of wheels..
Sod it, red hubs are worth it.

Yeah I said it.

After riding my new bike with Juicy 7s for a few weeks now, I'm starting to think that my XT V-brakes with Kool Stop pads are still stronger. The Avids are good, but the XTs are ridiculous. Maybe the Avids still aren't broken in? How long does it take?

About fifty full stops. If you're impatient, you can sand the disc.

i was thinking more like 30 stops

if they're not better by then, disc brakes and you probably just are not going to be a good match. sell them on ebay and use your rim brakes instead. you're not not missing much.

you'll be one step ahead when the novelty of disc brakes wears off and rim brakes see a resurgence.

if youre on a xc racer, then forget discs.. they weigh twice what vs do
if youre on a single speed... then youre crazy anyhow, so you might as well stick with vs
if youre on any other type of mountain bike, you should have discs.

I've done 50 stops and then some with them. And don't get me wrong, they are strong and strong enough, and I like them. But my V brakes are easily enough to send an unwary rider over the handlebars in an instant, even the Deore brakes I use on my commuter. My DMR doesn't have bosses for anything but disc brakes, anyway.

I don't mind my V's at all, but after some water crossings they tend to make a nasty "Scraping" type noise, as though there is gritty sand between the rim and the pad, but it goes away after a bit. I actually think it is the brake dust that causes this noise, regardless, I never have had any issue stopping in any weather with mine. Oh and I lied earlier, I actually have Avid single digit 7's, my bad.

Somethings on the rim/pad.

My BMX bike used to squeal until the black paint on the brake surface wore off.
(IDK why Voxom did that... but all well)

Disc brakes fix a problem I never had. Before Vs, old cantilevers kind of sucked .Since Vs came out I do'nt recall ever complaining about brakes. It looks like I wo'nt have a choice with my next mt. bike.I know,I know, they're probably very good ,but ,I do'nt bleed the brakes on my car and I've never had to bleed my XT Vs or Arch Rivals They'll stop you without complaints every time.

I also still use them on 2 of my spare bikes. They work fine as far as I am concerned. I also know quite a few die hard racers who also still use them, for in there minds they are lighter, and if you have nice ones they will stop on a dime.

I ride XC and singletrack on my RM Blizzard and just went back to lighter wheels and XT V-brakes... they have more than enough 1 finger power to stop my skinny ass on a dime and give back change.

XT brakes and Kool Stops make for some insane stopping power and some nice modulation.

But...but.. Specialized does rule!

Just got first bike equipped with disc brakes - Avid Elixirs - great stuff.

Never had any problem with the Vs on my older bikes though.

I use canti's on my commuter mtb. I find that they stop me more than adequately even in wet weather. The main reason that I am not using v's there is the pad wear rate. The cartridge style vbrake pads on my off road mtb wear relatively quickly in terms of overall mileage. It may be that there is less material. I put a lot less miles on the off road bike than I do the commuter.

The commuter canti pads are kool stop red eagle claw posts. They seem to have more meat on them than the cartridge pads. The rear can go about 2000 miles and the fronts have over 5000. I don't put anywhere near that sort of mileage into the MTB, but I am on the brakes a lot more when offroading.

Offroading involves more grit so that may be a factor. However, street commuting also involves a surprising amount of grit. I try to minimize that by giving the rims a quick hosedown when i get home from work in the evening. That seems to be a quick solution to at least knocking off some of the crud. A more involved cleaning happens every month or two in the winter. Less abrasive crud leads to less wear on the rims and the pads.

So yeah, canti's are cool too.
