Specialized's house-brand componentry

They make great frames, but what is up with Specialized specializing in suspension, cranks, and other stuff now?

On a lot of their mtbs you'll see that they come stock with Specialized "Future Shock" and use Specialized proprietary on the fly adjustment system.

I think this is great - more options open in the world of componentry. But does anyone know where I can find more info about the stuff itself? I searched for "Specialized future shock" on BF but not that much came up.

Compared to these conglomerates, how are individual component makers doing? Like Trek's Bontrager or Specialized branded stuff vs Rock Shox and Shimano?

If the sticker says "Specialized", it must be good!

The futureshock is very similar to what Fox's X series was. ((F100X F90X F80X)

I'm gonna have to agree. Not because I think they suck, I own a hardrock and love it, but simply to go against such a blatantly under informed opinion. Hope it was some form of sarcasm...

They've been doing the component thing forever. Specialized started out by importing "specialized" parts for touring and mountain bikes and didn't offer complete bikes until 1982.

I think they'll be okay as long as they retain compatibility.

Things have been going downhill for a long time for them in my opinion - starting with integrated headsets

Rock Shox rear XC shocks suck. Specialized I've heard bad things about their shocks. They don't look good either. For a 8K bike I want it to look good. Didn't some guy post up a snapped specialized BB?

Probably with that stupid "center clamp" design.

Don't know anything about quality, but it's all about the margins and how much they can make. I wouldn't be too worried about it as it's probably made in the same Taiwanese factory that makes everyones elses OEM stuff.
