Deore XT/Rhynolites at performance

I ordered this wheelset 2 weeks ago and have come to the conclusion that Performance doesn't really have these in stock. Instead of the XT 756 Hubs that they have advertised, they keep sending me the regular shimano 525 Hubs laced to rhynolites.

Should I try for a 3rd time? Will i notice a big difference between the 756 and the 525? My bike is out of commission now and id rather just ride then wait another 1-2 week just to get the same wrong wheelset. So maybe I'll just go with it... What do you guys think?

I don't want to badmouth Performance's customer service, but it's not the best. im sure many of you all know that already.

You may not notice any difference in performance but you paid for XT not Deore. I say make them get it right.

Agreed. Get some money back or ship them back.

get someone on the phone who can make it right. Be respectful and calm, but make it very clear what you need to make you happy. The #1 thing that prevents so many from getting something corrected is not being clear on what they want.
Come up with a $ number that you would be happy to stick with the wheels they have shipped you. Tell them you will be happy with a refund of that much and keep the wheels or that they need to send a shipping label to get their rims back and that you are taking your business elsewhere. If the wheels you ordered are exactly what you want, just get your money back or your will regret it.

Sticking me with Deore= 100% refund

That's crap.

I had the Rhynolite rims. I know that they have a good reputation, but I was less than slightly impressed. They don't have a machined sidewall. It may not be a big deal for most people, but that thud, thud, thud sound everytime the rim rotates around and the non-machined rim joint thudding against the brake pad, DANG! That is so annoying.

My disc rotors aren't machined. But they're pinned.

Hey man...incidentally I ordered a set of XT/Rhynolites a couple yrs ago from Jenson I think. They were decent but still machine-built. When a wheel is machine-built, the spoke tension is not quite there, ya know? They didn't prep either. (save $)

I ended up with a wheelset that I had to retention every couple-hundred miles. I'd much rather pay the extra$50-$80 and have my LBS or some good builder do the job by hand. You will be left with a wheel that is much stronger and will probably only need a one-time retention at about 100mi or so. Maybe an occasional truing...depending on your riding style.

XT/Deore 525 discrepancy

I'd definitely send them back, but you may never get the set with XT's. On the PerformanceBike website, the title for your wheels says Shimano XT, but all the hub pictures for the wheels show either Deore or Viam hubs. It seems likely that the title is incorrect, either that or their pictures are incorrect, but it may be difficult to get what you're paying for.

Good luck.

Sexywheelman14, You are right sir, I remember seeing that when i originally bought the wheels. I compared that pic with pics from Bicyclewheelwarehouse.com. The picture definitely had deore 525 instead of the XT that was advertised...

The First time I called I made them send me a shipping label which they tried to make me pay for. I told her the error was made by them, therefore they should pay. So she finally agreed to mail me a label. I later called my local Performance and found out i could return it there, so i did and got my refund that day instead of waiting like 2-3 weeks for shipping back and forth.

She then had the "correct" wheelset shipped to me and charged it to my account. Good thing i asked her the total or else she would have charged me shipping AGAIN and she forgot to minus out the %10 coupon code i originally used. I told i should not have to pay shipping this time since the first shipment was wrong due to their error.

One week later the same i got 525 wheelset, and now I go and check their website and find out my suspisions were true. The XT wheelset is no longer on their site. Instead they have the 525 going for $149.99. I only paid $107 which i thought would have been an awesome deal for an XT wheelset. They had it wrong on their website all along.

You guys can rest assured I'm getting my money back and taking my business elsewhere.

On a positive side note, I once ordered from our friends at Harris Cyclery and they shipped the wrong size Crank length for my SS build up. I sent them an email which consisted to 2 sentences about the error in shipment. I got a response that day and within 3 days the correct item came along with a return shipping label. They didn't even charge my account while waiting for the return like most places do. I wish i had an LBS like that around here...

Glad to hear you were able to sort that out.

In the end, given the attractive price of the wheel set and discount coupon at performance, and taking into account your time writing emails and on the phone, how much do you think it cost you?

I hate that stuff.

I hear ya! Talk about a huge waste of time. In addition to time that I don't get to ride because my bike is waiting on wheels. The weather has been gorgeous these last few days and I cant wait to get on the trails.

Thanks for everyones advice.
