what is the most reliable and toughest?

Matt, $100 is a tough price-point. I don't know of anything new for that price that is good for mountain-biking. Could you scrape up $400 or so? That'd get you into some entry level models from Giant, Specialized, Trek.

As was said, that's a tough price point. I think trying to come up with another $50 or so, then look at used. Be sure the used bike needs no repairs, LBS's cost money. Hope it works for you.

I'd say the Roadmaster trike. My 2 year old nephew has one and he is rough on that thing. I'd say it's pretty tough...and not quite $100 either. You could use the extra cash you save to buy a new helmet.

Ed- +1 on the Troll, as long as it has the toughest/most advanced bombproof wheelset available and can handle whatever is thrown at it (or whatever it's thrown at).
