Crank Brothers Mallet

I might be trading in my hybrid for an entry level mountain bike as I'm not sure how much I'll be into it, so I don't want to blow a ton of money. Anyways, I'd like to get some pedals that I can use with tennis shoes so I can hop on and just go for a fun ride with my wife. I've been looking at the Shimano M545 as it has clips on one side and platform on the other http://bike.shimano.com/publish/cont..._mountain.html
I also saw the Crank Brothers Mallet, which seems like the same thing, but I can't tell from the picture. Can anyone tell me if it's possible to just use tennis shoes with Mallets?
Thanks.

Jeff

Just started a thread regarding this. Look in the recent thread history for "Crank Bros Acid Pedals?" or something to that effect.

If you're open to Shimano then I highly recommend you look at the model that Gastro recommended. I'm sort of painted into a Crank Bros corner so have to look within those ranks but if I had to start again I'd look at the Shimanos.

Yeah, I found your thread after posting. Thanks though.
I just found out that I won't be getting much for the hybrid I was going to trade in (under $60), so I'll just keep that as my "jump on and go"/rain bike. That being said, I'll probably going with some Eggbeaters since they're supposed to be good inexpensive pedals.
Of course now that I'll have 3 bikes, my wife is probably going to kill me.

Do NOT get cheap Eggbeaters. I would not go lower than the Stainless (SL) model. I hear stories about spindles snapping on the Mixers and Chrome models. That said, I have run Eggbeater 2Ti's, Eggbeater SL's and Mallet 1's, in addition to Shimano 520's and 105's (SPD-SL).

Cool, thanks for the advice. I'm probably going to REI tomorrow to take advantage of the 20% member coupon.
