Worst crash ever...

Hey all...I was wondering if everyone would want to post their worst crash theve been through on a bike. First, i will tell you mine. I was about 12 years old, and i was going up and down my driveway (it is long) and each time id get to an end, i would get faster and faster...and everytime, i would jam on my back brake, and come to a...well...screeching stop ( so bad for the tire). Well, i was just ready to head inside when i decided to take one last run....fullspeed. I started off on the road, and then I turned into my driveway, and by that time, i was going FULL speed, and ahead of me was my garage that i always stopped right infront on. WELL...in last gear, going full tilt...i guess i blanked out....and right infront of my garage is a half foot hump so the water wont enter the garage. But the thing is, knowing i would be able to stop with jusy my back brake, I put on my fron one too....WRONG MOVE. I put the brakes on right on the hump, and i went soaring sooo far. To be precise...the garage is 30 ft long...and the driveway is 5 ft into the garage....and i went flying right to the back...ontop of a pile of bricks (we were putting a brick floor in) Well the crash took like it seemed like not even a millisecond it happened so fast, but the worst part was when my bike came flying ontop of me and it dug into my legs! (i wish now that the bike would of gone a few inched further higher and hit the roof....but it was so fast. I ended up breaking ONLY my wrist...(i always wear a helmet now) but i had to have 2 casts on for 3 weeks at a time, and then a splint for another 6 weeks.....my summer was a pain......it was bad.....so what were your worst wrecks?

Coincidentally, my worst crash to date also tool place around that age - I think I was about 13. Anyway, I was late for school one morning and riding like the wind to make up time. As I was cruising downhill, I decided to glance at my watch to see just how late I was going to be. While bringing my left wrist up, I saw a recessed manhole cover looming milliseconds ahead. As my brain registered that I was going to hit at full speed, my left hand began its slow-motion journey back to the handlebar - too late. I hit it hard, the front tire spun 90-degrees and I did what must have been a spectacular endo (with no helmet!).

I hit head-first and lost conciousness for a short time, lying in the middle of the road. Fortunately it wasn't a very busy street and the next car coming up the hill was driven by an older lady, or I'd have been roadkill. She stopped, helped me into her car (nice of her because blood was gushing from my head, arms, legs, etc.) and drove me the mile back to my house. I'll never forget the look on my mother's face as she came out to the car to see me.

I got to spend the next several hours in the emergency room where a nurse went to work on my wounds with a toothbrush. Difficult to forget that feeling - like someone pouring salt, lemon and tabasco sauce in an open wound - all at the same time! I spent the next two weeks in a slow recovery. It was kind of cool, in a way, because I got to miss some school. This crash is never far from my mind because I still have no feeling above my left eye, can't move my left eyebrow and it tingles when the weather changes! Needless to say, I ALWAYS wear a helmet today and consider myself incredibly fortunate that crash didn't do more lasting damage...

wow that is crazy! glad you're alright.

hmm few weeks ago it was wet outside and there was a technical section of twisty downhill through some trees. i managed all the rooted sections fine, catching slight air on a few of them. but right after that technical section there was this exposed root, soooo tiny i didn't even think about it, i just rode over it. well, wrong move, it was a small root but it was slick as wax and because i wasn't expecting anything close to a fall, i got caught by surprise and hit my head pretty hard. i had a minor concussion, thank god for helmets!

My worst crash ever was last year, I crashed on a downhill in a big rockpile and cracked a rib. Man it hurt. The worst thing about it was I was riding with my son, and crashed several miles from the Jeep. Several miles of trail from the Jeep. I didn't think I would ever get back...

My worst crash has to be the one which messed my knee up. Was hucking of a ledge and lost grip in mid air, went down awkwardly on my left knee.

Certainly not my worst, but I bruised some ribs out on a trail as well. I was hauling ass around a corner and one of the trail builders had left a 1 inch stump from a small sappling sticking out of the ground in the middle of the trail. My front wheel hit it and deflected me off the trail into a tree. I smashed into the tree and flew head over heals finally coming to rest with my chest on top of some logs. Knocked the hell out of me and I was covered in dirt from head to toe. I couldn't sleep or breath for weeks because of it.. so painful.

My 2 "worst" injuries happend this year. Earlier in the season I was on a log ride, I rode up to the top and grabbed a tree. I totally freak out on log rides sometimes, and I was only about 6 feet off the ground. So I hold myself there for about 30 seconds, and then let go and try to keep going, off I went. I tried to dismount by jumping over the bike but my right foot hit the tire and I landed flat on my back. Thats not even the part that hurt though. Later on the same trail I was off my bike and getting back on, the front wheel got hung up on a root and my chest felt like it ripped open. Some kind of heavy contusion, nothing broken (atleast I dont think).

Second one was I crashed at searchmont. It was the AMBC in september and it felt like I was going pretty fast down the course. The turn right before the "double drop" that goes left and down took me out. I came around there kinda hot and I saw a tree and nailed it with my bars. Went over the bars and the bike flipped over onto me and the pedal hit me in the back. It cracked a rib! I was in so much pain I couldent even get the bike off, I yelled and somebody came and took it off. Tried to get back on and ride but my chain was jammed in the spokes quite well. Eventually rolled down the hill and got the worst time of the day

My worst crash would have to be the one two weeks ago where I was jumping a gravity jump for the third time and I got too overconfident, leaned for the turn that comes after the landing while taking off from the jump (really bad idea) so when I landed I came down really hard on my left shoulder (second time that day). I heard a pop, but thought it was only a twig that I had landed on. When I stood up, my riding partner asked how my shoulder was and so I swung my left arm around checking the mobility (another really bad idea) not realizing that I had broken my collar bone. As I felt around my shoulder with my right hand I felt a strange bump near my collar bone. I (with the help of my riding partner) rode the short distance back to the car and he drove me to the hospital... I say this is my worst crash because it's the first bone I've ever broken. Now I'm just waiting for it to heal...

i guess my worst crash would have been back in highschool, i didn’t get hurt but it could have been real bad if i did. i was riding on some singletrack in the valley behind my old building and i was coming through this s-turn through some trees. i had never gone through it fast before, but this time i felt like bombing through it. i made the first turn around the first tree and leaned over to make the second turn around the second tree... i guess the trail was kind of sandy though cause i wasn’t turning and saw i was heading straight for the third tree. i straightened up the bike and just tried to brace myself for the impact. i smacked the tree dead-on and my back tire went up sending me straight up in the air. i came crashing down on top of my bike, got up and yelled out “woohoo” from the rush i had. i then picked up my bike and as i pushed forward in order to jump on, the back tire came up. i looked down at the bike and saw that the top tube and down tube had been bent down and the front tire was pressed up against the down tube. i ended up walking back home. i realised after that i could have gotten hurt real bad if i had gone flying into the tree instead of just straight up – i wasn’t wearing a helmet either back then, so i’m real glad i didn’t get hurt at all.

Mine was at age 12. Got my first bike. Going flat out and then this cab came out of nowhere and i rammed into the front tyre. I flew 360 degrees over the cab and landed on my back. I wasn't hurt, just scratches and i was actually scared cos it was a new bike and i thought my parents were gonna kill me. The front tyre and fork was bent all the way to the seat tube. Sheesh!

my worst wreck ever.............................I've never really had any crashes that have ****ed me up for good on the bike(hockey is a differant story), but its mostly because i'm a ***** and really try to avoid something that could end up jacking me up. But my worst wreck would have to be when i was 14 and i was crusing through some open singletrack on my blue Trek 6500 and came around a left hand turn wide and for some reason my tire came out and my head landed hard onto a root that was sticking out from a nearby tree. I cracked my helmet all the way through and had a bad ass headache, but finished the final mile and a half on the bike.

My worst accident in hockey was when i snapped my leg like a twig. I was playing right wing and the puck was in our end and it came up the boards to me on a break out and the opposing defenceman lifted my stick in the air and as that was happening my left foot stayed while the rest of my leg was moving. The result was i broke my tibia and fibula all the was through and cracked my tibia almost to me knee in conjuction with the other fractures. The result 3 months in a cast, with 3 differant casts, and 6 months before i could start riding or playing hockey again

2002 NORBA Nationals, in practice for DH. I hit a kicker blind, I hadn't seen it from the lift. I looped out, landed on my neck hitting so hard that my pelvis smashed into my facemask. After about 20 minutes of sitting on the side of the trail, I got up and rode the rest of the way down to the first aid tent to get some ice for my back...I was still gonna race. I started having spasms that sent my breathing haywire, oxygen sats dropped to about 80 and they called the paramedics.

Broken back. Ouchie.

I have a bunch of other ones like the headfirst fall from a 12-14ft cliff, the failed 12ft wheelie drop to flat, the crash that took out my PCL, the crash where I hit so hard it knocked the rear wheel of my bike clean off...and down trail about 100ft........

My worst crash, was when my friend wanted to do some recording of me,and I really pushed it becuase we wanted to get some good footage. On the trail I ride, there is a large bank with a steep enough incline that you cannot walk up it easily without sliding and grabing on the bushes, etc., and its like twenty feet down, well all of the local Motorcycle riders have built a jump at the top of it, climb the hill and hit that little jump. Well when they bulit the trail, they built a small corner into the trail, but it doesn't matter to them, cuase they are going up hill, and it doesn't effect them...but I can't ride up it (trust me I was dumb enough to try, and my c'dale landed on top of me.) so I have to go from the other way. At first I didn't get air coming down cuase I was scared, and so he asked me to do it agian, so I went and got air this time, but it still wasn't impresive, so this time I went hard at it...not a good idea, I had like three feet of air, and I land after the turn!! I didn't even land on the trail, which is like ten feet from the jump, to that turn, plus I was like 3' in the air. So I tried to throw it sideways, and get it back on the trail, but I couldn't in time so I just kept going...I hit these black berries, and I didn't know what was on the other side...it was a 2' drop off!! I didn't have any balance what so ever, and when my front tire just dropped like a bomb, my hands came off the handle bars, and I was partially standing, with the tip of my seat right behind my junk! Then of course the bike had to hit me there when it went flying out between my legs, and I grabbed myself, I thought it was going to be over as soon as I hit that bank, but I somehow managed to land on two feet. I wont be getting air of that anymore, I just ride down it, and thats enough.

O.K I was'nt going to reply to this but what the hell.
My worst push bike related incident was when I was 9. I lived in Hawaii at the time and it was the 80's so BMX's were cool, me and my mate were always doing little jumps and stuff, one thing I was reall good at was riding with no hands. I could ride up and down the street round corners everything with no hands, I was showing my mate how to turn with no hands I was going round in a circle, I was making the circle turn progressivly tighter and tighter! Untill I turned so tight that the front wheel went like 90 degrees to the frame and pitched me over the handle bars. Thing is as I went forward my shorts got stuck on the brake levers, I went over the bike put both my hands down and I kissed pavement (or sidewalk) really rather hard! I broke my nose and put my front teeth through my top lip. (probably why I'm so good looking now ). I think I hurt myself in a few other place's too, but at the time my face was throbbing the most.

I've had other crashes some on motorbike's and on skateboard but none quite so memorable than that one.

Went over a short-steep rise with a steep downhill on the other side. Only problem was I had not seen this one before and it turned about 30 degrees immediately over the top so I was not headed in the right direction. I managed to get both wheels down but when the front landed I was next to a 6" pine tree. Smacked with my helmet and side of my face. Knocked me out for about 30 seconds and gave a nice bruise/scrape to the right side of my face. I am now more cautious on trails I am unfamiliar with.

I was jumping bikes ala evil knieval the motercycle guy, when I was 13.
8 foot launch ramps to 2 foot landers- we didn't have bmx- not invented yet I think- so we would take mustangs - remove seat\post ect- put fatty tires on- anyway- we built a monster ramp @ the end of a hill- I overshot the landing ramp 1'st jump and flattened my rear rim ( made the landing tho)- sooo my kid buddy had just built the same jump bike -I borrowed his.... somehow his front wheel came off and jammed into the forks @ the top of the ramp and I headslammed into the pavement- I had indents into my skull from pepples on the road. they also had to flush out my ear canal cause it was full of blood.
probably made me a bit of a chicken s**t about jumping, I switched to scootboarding and wore a helmet.

And a photo from Charlie kelly's website- thankfully not me...owwwww!

5 months later, I'm doing quite fine. I feel the difference between my legs at certain times and it is not as bad as the doctors made it out to be.

No new bike yet either. Additionally, turns out I had torn more one ligament. I didn't tear my ACL (thank god), but I did tear my MCL, and 3 more in various parts of my knees.

this summer the stout axel on my enduro broke when i jumped off a 3.5' wall to flat. the forks went right into the ground and I went over the bars pretty hard (you can imagine the angle the bike hit at with no front wheel). i hit my head pretty hard but luckily i was wearing a helmet. It sucks because now I dont trust the specialized Stout hub and axel so I wont try the jump any more.

I have pics of the broken axel somewhere, i'll try to find em.

Bummer, broke a front axel. That's all our worst nightmares I think. Not much you can do when that happens...
