Best buys in a 29r?

Is there a consensus out there as to the best of the 'under a grand' (preferrably geared) 29r bike?
I'm saving up, halfway there! I've got to get some test rides in on:

1. Kona Unit 2-9 w/ 1-9 gearing at $900
2. Redline Monocog ($?$)
3. Haro Mary that my friend says he can do a 1-9 for @$1000
4. REI/Navarro model runs $500+ (know nothing about it...)
5. Gary Fisher Utopia (a "dual sport" cyclocross-ready compromise) at $800
6.....no other models found locally yet.

Thanks!

The Utopia doesn't belong in the group. If you're going to include the Monocog, check out the Jamis Exile 29'er. It's a schweet rig.

The Utopia definately isn't a cyclocross bike,a nd a cyclocross bike isn'tt a 29er.

I do think the redlines are a pretty good value. the D440 comes with reasonable components and a 1x9 drivetrain.

But I think you should be more specific with your prioriorities. Do you want:

1) Suspension? (Plan to spend at least a grand to get something decent, I would think.)
2) 1x9 or fiull 3x9 gearing? The options you listed were all 1x9.

The Fisher Cobia is decently specced and I think around 1100 dollars, and the frame is a great platform for future upgrades.

The GT geared 29er is fully rigid and comes with so-so brakes and a deore drivetrain. Nothing special, but it's cheap. The advantage to the Fisher would be that they probably have the 29er geometry down pat. GT may or may not.

Pardon my ignorance but what is the advantage of a 29" wheel over a 26" wheel ??

In what conditions would a 29" be better than a 26" and vice versa ?? Thanks :-)

1 you are as tall as lurch
2 fast flowing trails
3 flat or fast climbs
4 obstacle clearance

The OP wants a complete bike for under a grand. With that kind of cash he or she could buy a Niner frame...not much else.
