have you checked out transition bikes yet? i believe that the covert would be in your price range, and more than capable of your riding.

I'd lean towards the Heckler, assuming that's the geometry and amount of travel you want. Granted, you're a larger rider, but don't jump to 5 inches too quickly, especially if you're going to be doing lots of uphill.
Anyway, Pretty similar in a lot of ways to the Heckler is the Kona Dawg, so there's another option. I have one and definitely like it, but now that I have it, I'm not sure it's any better than the Heckler.

I would look at the Stumpjumper FSR Comp. This bike is in your price range, also the suspension is tried and true. I have owned 2 stumpjumper fs bikes. My current bike is a 2007 Stumpjumper FSR Expert with
the brain technology and I cant say enough about this bike. Anyway good luck in your search.
The linkage of the Cannondale just looks to weak to me, but thats just my 2 cents.....

I ride pretty much the same terrain as you describe and love my C'dale Rush (similar to the Rize but with a single pivot rear). Mine was a lower spec bike in the $1800 price range. I love the bike and think it's about perfect for me. I rented and rode a much higher spec'd Stumpy FSR ($4000 price range) and didn't like it as much as the Rush. So without riding any of what you mention I'd guess the Rize would most likely be the best fit for myself, although I'd certainly test ride all of 'em.

Of the ones you mention, I'd go with the Heckler. That's a heck of a bargain for getting a SC.
But I have to second lofnsjoke on the Transition Covert. With a similar build kit, it runs less and the geometry is a tad slacker.

I don't know about the "helluva beating" part, I mean, it is a C'dale . . . but they are nice rides. There was a demo day out here a few weeks ago and the Rize was a fun bike. The kids and I are heading out in just a bit to pick one up for the Mrs B-Day.
