alright, i'm looking to buy my first mountain bike and i'm stuck between a specialized hardrock and a trek 4100 or 3700. what do you suggest?

I would say the Hardrock. This seems to be a killer bike in the 'bang for the buck' category.

Depends. The hardrock is more of a hardtail freeride bike so the frame is made to take a bit more of a beating than the Treks you mentioned. It's probably a bit heavier too. Consider it if you are doing things where you will be getting airborne, urban stunt riding, etc.

If you are going to be using the bike more as a trail/fitness bike, both will work but the Trek will probably be lighter and easier for long uphill climbs.

The hardrocks do look like they can take more of a beating especialy in the head tube area but its still quite flexy around the bottom bracket and is more of a trail bike. I would choose the hardrock over the trek no matter what.

He just asked what we suggested, so I suggested Specialized. He didn't even say what hardrock he was looking at.

Really, it's just 6 of one, half a dozen of another.

I'd suggest a Hardrock for Jumps, and the trek for mainly XC, I have a hardrock and im extremely pleased with it, I dont like Treks Much... I dont like the style of the frames, or the way the bike feels, thats just me though..

Well, there is actually 7 different Hardrocks and only two Treks mentioned :-)

Based on the Treks you mention, I'm assuming you're looking at the Hardrock XC or Sport. You might want to also look at the Kona LANA'I.

They're all entry level Mountain Bikes and better than something you could get at Walmart or somewhere like that. (And more expensive...) The Hardrock Sport probably has the best components of the lot.

In a similar position myself. My plan is too buy the hardrock rigid, which is like £225 for the 03, £260 for the 04 - then add a decent marz fork. Should come out at the same price as a hr sport, but with a better fork. Doin this because i want the hardrock, but some reviews ive seen say the fork aint much good, unless your gettin the top of range one.

I have to admit, I like slightly heavier bikes even for trail riding. The larger mass of something like a freerider or dirtjumper, coupled with their beefier tires, feels more stable to me than a lightweight XC bike -- which sometimes feels squirrelly on loose surfaces, and over wet roots and logs.

You'd think you would have more control on a lighter bike since it's more "flickable". But that doesn't always seem so.

I think lighter weight bikes are more of a concern for competitive XC riders. Not so much for recreational riders. Something to consider when thinking about the beefy Hardrock vs. a lightweight Trek.

Another vote for the Specialized. I love my Trek, but the Hardrock will serve you much better than those low enty level Trek's.

I welcome diverging ideas, and like I said at another thread, 90 percent of the people at this forum are good, helpful people compared to other forums.

Only a fool with a closed mind would discount opinions from other people.

Yet, this KleinMp99 takes cheap-shots, and insults anyone who has an opinion different from him. He doesn't even back up his argument or even explain why he doesn't agree with someone else's opinion.

He just replies with one sentence, neandrethal answers. That speaks loads for the level of his intelligence; or lack thereof.

Also, it's very stupid for him to think he can talk tough behind the anonimity of the internet and hurl insults because there will be no repercussions. Hasn't anyone seen "The Net"?

I mean, if I were really vengeful, how hard would it be to track down a 17 year old bike mechanic at Lakeshore Bikes Inc. in Marquette Michigan?

As for the foul language in the e-mails. Are you sure I called you the "c" word in my email? I don't think I'VE used that since the 6th grade. I may have used the "p" word when I asked you to stop acting like one. But that's no more harsh than the stuff you'd be hearing in the forums at PinkBike.com.
