kickstand?

Do you guys have a kickstand on your bike?

I used to, but the bolt holding it on kept getting lose, so finnally I over tightened it, and the whole mounting bracket broke in half. :D

I bought another kickstand, I still havnt put it on! :D I hate leaning the bike against the wall, and having it slide and hit the floor! :D

Maelstrom 01-12-04 10:13 PM

Kick stands are dangerous on mtb's...I don't use them.

a2psyklnut 01-12-04 10:14 PM

Are you serious? Or, are you trolling?

My bike spends 75% of its riding time on paved roads (city slicker), I get to go offroad about once a month! :D

What can go wrong? :D

why? :D

Edwards 01-12-04 10:43 PM

OK
You don't need a kickstand, just lean the bike on its left side to protect the RD and you are fine. (And kickstands look bad on a MB)

I've actually seen a kid impale himself with the kickstand. It was all wobbly and didn't stay in the up position. Anyways, he crashed, "endoed" and the bike came down on top of him. Well, the kickstand was sticking out and it got him right in the calf muscle. About a 2" deep puncture! Had to get 4 stiches as well! (lots of blood) Also, if you've ever had a puncture wound, you know how much they hurt!

Let's give the guy a chance before we all say "troll". One would be surprised just how many bikes (particularly department store bikes) come fitted with a kickstand as standard. Of course, if anyone does suspect "troll", why are they responding?

FWIW, I personally have never seen the value in the things. I can lean my bike against a wall if necessary and avoid having it fall to the ground. It just involves taking an extra couple of seconds to make sure that it won't.

Mr Jerk 01-13-04 10:15 AM

I was just asking if you guys using kickstands! :D

I said I dont have a kickstand on my bike! :D

robertsdvd 01-13-04 10:22 AM

Personally, I have no problems with kickstands on commuters, tourers or utility cycles. I do, however, have a problem with other cyclists poo-poo'ing someone simply because they have a kickstand. Bike cops have kickstands and they do some insane stuff on those things.

bike cops use those kickstands that are mounted near the rear axle, they're actually forwerd facing. If that thing were to pop down, KA-BOOM!!! :D

Jim311 01-13-04 10:33 AM

Since when to bike cops do any insane stuff?

:roflmao:

robertsdvd 01-13-04 10:38 AM

Well, I for one am not versed, yet at least, at riding up stairs.

I have no kickstands on my bikes for the exact same reason you just mentioned above.

You're lucky you didn't crimp whatever piece of tubing it was mounting.

... as opposed to having a gust of wind or an errant elbow brush by and knocking the bike over with the same results?

Besides... everyone knows that the ultimate way to hold up a bike is... to use another bike. ;)

Other ways to stand up a bike without a kickstand include the curb-method...

http://www.neebu.net/~khuon/gallery/2003STP-2/PICT0026

... note that this also works for mountain bikes...

http://www.neebu.net/~khuon/gallery/..._lake/PICT0009

... and the following would probably be the preferred method for some of the male cyclists out there... ;)

I don't think you will find that we were poo-pooing...I could care less. But on a mtb doing mtb things...they are dangerous. Quite simple really.

Hey Khuon,

There you go again bringing up the Natophelia thing again!

I can see where a kickstand could be a dangerous thing if you do a lot of agressive riding on very dangerous terrain. A lot of people like me don't do that however.

I have a kickstand on one mountain bike and not on the other. I by far prefer the bike with the kickstand. I hate being on the trail and needing to climb off to adjust clothing etc. Every time I have to scout for a place that I can lean my bike against. With the kickstand bike, I just dismount wherever I want.

I can see the safety issue with the kickstand. But i also see a bit of fashion police involved. There is nothing wrong with a kickstand in many situations. I love mine and may be in the market for another.

a2psyklnut 01-14-04 11:00 AM

No one's mentioned the weight factor. Although NOT a weight wienie, I don't want to have any excess weight on my bike.

Yep, I'll have to agree with you there.

On every ride that I take I can find this thing known as "the ground" upon which I rest my bike.

I guess if you can't find "the ground," or a wall, tree, rock, post, etc. a kickstand might be handy.

But if you're a poser like me, you'll want to stand it up on its own, just to show off. :D

I don't know what kind of trails you ride but the ones I'm used to have far too uneven or unstable (loose ground, soft ground, rocky ground) a terrain for a kickstand to be of much use. The end result would be the bike returning to it's lowest potential energy state by tipping over onto its side. If there's nothing very stable to lean it against, I simply preempt this by putting it down on its nondrive side in the first place.

The original post asked if we used kickstands and we answered that with a good supply of reasons. This is afterall the mountain biking forum and given the scope of the general audience, I would have to say that most of the responders here have extremely good reasons for avoiding kickstands. Your "many situations" probably do not apply to many of these readers and as such the appropriatness of a kickstand on their bikes is most likely proportionally opposite.

sm266 01-14-04 04:07 PM

Nope-no kickstand, no reflectors, either. Kickstands are dangerous.
