? for those running 1x7 (or 8/9)...
 

If you are running a 1x7/8/9 set-up, did you use a single speed crank or a triple less two chain rings? I have a triple crank on my mtn bike now but it is riveted and thus the chain rings cannot be removed. I am looking to buy a better square taper crank and exploring both single speed cranks and better triples with replaceable chain rings.

I got one with the 3 rings and removed them.

I appreciate the responses. Next question. From my readings it seems that a square taper crank will fit a square taper bottom bracket almost always. The issues would be the spindle length and finding a crank designed for a specific length. Is that correct?

If I were me...(last time I checked, I still was)...I'd bag the square taper and get an ISIS crankset. If you're trying to save $$$, you can still get a nice ISIS crankset cheap.

If you can afford about $100...gt a lower line RaceFace or Shimano with ext. BB and never worry about it again.

(BTW, you really DO need a 3 ring crankset so you can run a bash on the outside so you don't drop your chain)

One other option for the front is ditching the granny and high gear and running the middle chainring with a bash guard.

Reading the OP will tell you that he has a riveted crankset.

i've always rolled ghetto in the past. my beater i have is running a 3x8 SS... the chain rings can't really be removed, and i didn't bother buying a SS conversion kit; i just roll with a straight line from the cassette. no front de. no rear de (of course). haven't had any slips yet... horizontal rear drops, so no need for a tensioner.

on my "nice" bike, i'm rolling 1x9 with no bashguard. no chain slip yet... if i go ss, i probably won't get a bashy either... 'cause i really don't have a need ofr one?

That is a good point. My only issue would be choosing the appropriate size - I suppose I need to do some more research to find out how to chose an appropriate bottom bracket. I would like to spend less than $100. I have a hardtail Gary Fisher and really don't want to drop too much into it.

Truvativ Stylo cranks are cheap. The 2008 XT's will last you a long time with the new middle ring.

I think a bashguard is pretty much needed if you are off road. I was doing some light trail riding yesterday and on a few of the steeper declines or obstacles, I did have the chain jump off. I am currently running a 1x7 by just using one of the front chain rings. The front derailleur has been removed since it stopped working properly.

I think I will go with a triple, using the middle chain ring - something around a 32 or 34 - and add a bashguard and possible a chain guide for extra security.

Yeah get a whole new crank (BB and arms). Run it single speed with a bash and you'll be all good. And if you are interested I am selling my old Truvativ Hussefelt if you are interested.

My friend went 1x8 when I went 1x9. He chose a BG and an N-Gear Jumpstop. He's dropped his chain 2-3 times. I've NEVER dropped mine. I jump around and ride some rough terrain.

I ran a 1x8 with no inner or outer guides on a Trek 4300 build. Dropped it ALL THE TIME on the rough and choppy stuff. I'd even drop it on jumps.

Lordy, I hate to use this as an example...Cheeto was running a naked 1x8 with droppings too. (FWIW)

No it's not necessary...I just like the fact that I've NEVER dropped mine on my current 1x9.

One of the advantages of 1x9/8 gearing is you can run a short cage derailer if you have a fairly closely geared cassette. . . that will also help with the chain drop issues. A used road derailer is good if you can get dirt cheap.
