That is some great ride footage! I'm amazed at how fluid and jar-free the helmet camera scenes turned out. Can you share a little bit about the equipment setup for those of us thinking of trying our own hand at camerawork?

Yeah, I've seen that before and was wondering if that's what was used. How about the recording unit itself? How much does everything weigh? any tips on how it's all carried/stowed? How crash-worthy is it?

I believe all the external small lipstick sized cameras need an actual video camera hooked to them. You carry the video camera in a backpack or fanny pack, make sure to pad it well. Weight depends on the video camera, but it wont be that much no matter what camera you use. It all depends on how you crash.....a hard direct hit to either module might kill it, I dont know. Viosport is actually a locally run company, but is known bigtime throughout the states. You can see their cameras on TV shows like the real world on MTV, and they can be seen at many sporting events also.

I will have to talk to Brent to see what the exact set up is...but basically it is a Vio Sport Helmet cam with a sony Digital Video Camera in a padded back pack..

The trick is for the following rider to be right up on the lead....and use a wider angle lens....that is the issue I guess. You need to have at least two riders that are good enough to stay together...of course the filming rider has to be communicating with the lead to let him/her know to slow down or speed up.

If you watch in some if the shots...like at about 3'27" the two are in the air at the same time...there was not much of a gap. And that last hit...the fern gap...which they had in Chain Reaction 5...is about 20 or 25 feet down and about the same out. JD was in the air as Hardy landed...there was no where to go if Hardy ate it.

But, even on more mellow trails the key is for the riders to be close.

Actually the lipstick cam footage was obviously of inferior quality when compared to the handcam stuff (color balance, etc.). There's only so much that you can do with a $200 consumer lipstick camera.

I probably pay too much attention to the helmet jarring of lipstick cams but there was a good deal of jarring in that vid, like most lipstick vids that are done on rough terrain.

Of course all of our vids can not be of the same quality as Pete Fagerlin's....seriously though, thanks for the compliment. Having seen some of your stuff myself I know that you know about vids and pics...even if you don't know squat about cars ;)

traded in my viosport for an Xtreme Recall. more pro level but surprisingly not all that much more in cost

better helmet mount
better camera
better cabling
lighter
more rugged

and it comes with a special insert that will protect your camcorder when you eat dirt.

I'm sorry man, but I think this guy's video seemed much smoother than the ones I saw at xtremerecall....
