Tires for My Application
So I've decided to keep my Schwinn s9[six]. It's from about 1997, but has treated me well. It's in need of new paint (I beat the heck out of it), new tires, new tubes (if I don't go tubeless), and a good soaking of the chain and sprockets in oil.
First is first, I need new tires/tubes . The sidewalls on my rear tire are pretty much shot. It sucks too as there is plenty of tread left. The front seems okay, but I don't want to risk anything so I will be replacing that as well. The tires on there now are Continental Traction tires. They measure 26x2.1":
I need a new set, but it doesn't look like they make these same ones anymore. I do 85% trail riding, and maybe 15% pavement that connects trails. The trails are loose gravel (small rocks), dirt, minor sand, as well as some puddles, minor mud, etc. I don't do "downhill racing" or uphill climbs, just the down/up hill stuff that a typical trail has on it. What would you all recommend brand/style wise?
I like the idea of a slightly less aggressive front tire as well as the Slime tubes. I do, however, want something very aggressive, or at least similar to my front tire. I'm stopping by a local "Bike Line" as well as "Exton Bicycles" during lunch or after work to see what they have.
I went over the bike pretty thoroughly yesterday. I cleaned it up nicely. I aired up the tires, only to have the rear lose air after a 2 min ride around the parking lot.
I also noticed that my front rim is slightly bent. Is it cheaper to have this fixed, or just purchase a whole new assembly?
Also, I found some Panaracer Fire XC Pro Kevlar Tire 60 TPI for a killer deal (under $20/tire) and figured I'd go that route. They look like a great tire and the reviews are through the roof. Anything special I need to know when buying these? They are $40/tire at my local bike shop!
Thanks!!

As for the dented rim. It really depends. If it is really dented and not simply out of true then it will should be replaced. You can buy just a rim and have a wheel rebuilt onto your existing hub. I would recommend though if you have a lower end hub to just buy a whole new wheel. Building wheels can get expensive because unless you have experience doing it it can be a very easy thing to mess up. So for the cost of the rim and building plus a little extra you could get a nice wheel. But if you have a nice higher end hub just get a new rim put on.

If the tires you had were good for your terrain, then the Fire XC's should be a great bang for the buck replacement. They are an old design but still valid in a lot of different terrain.

I was actually going to suggest the Panaracer Fire XC Pro 2.1's until I got to the end of your post, hehe.
It's a great tire for your application and should last a long time. Rolls pretty smooth on pavement for a knobby.getum

Thanks all. I just ordered the Panaracer Fire XC Pro Kevlar's from BlueSky. I got some regular Kenda rubber tubes for now as I don't remember any issues with flats in the past on the trails I used to ride. I will most likely purchase the Slime strips as well, but we'll see once I get back into the swing of things.
The rim I don't think is really dented. It's definitely not straight though. When you ride it you can see it spin and it moves a little out of true. I'll check with the local Bike Line to see on cost of true'ing up the rim. I also am purchasing a chain locally. Do I just tell them what bike I have and they can recommend a chain for me? Or do I need to find the info on my chain first?
Thanks again!

All you really need to know is how many speeds your bike has. If you have a 9 speed then you need a 9 speed chain, etc. I would just go for a cheeper Sram chain they hold up reasonably well and are only like 20 dollars.

Sounds great. I think it's a 21 speed haha. Honestly, it's been so long. Lets see, 7 on the rear and 3 up front I think, so yes.. 21.

So that would need a 7 speed chain because you go off of the rear cassette not the total gears.

make sure you get the panaracers with 127 tpi made in japan they go for $35.00, the easiest way to know is by the big writing on the sidewall, also they are much lighter.
