Disk brakes with no mounts?Possible!

i've posted this before so if you've already read it im mot going mad!!The google bot gave me a link to a sight that sold what i wanted but i've checked the post and the links seem to have gone so thought i'd give it another try!Do your stuff google bot!!

Anyway what it is, is that i have a Cannondale SuperV800 with fattyD headshox forks. The frame has disk brake mounts however for some reason the forks do not (I thought you needed the power on the front? its cannondale im sure they've got some logic for it!!).
So what im after is a gizmo that fixes to the forks so that i can mount the brake caliper!
If anyone knows where i can get one of these please let me know!!As i said i've seen them somewhere, its just finding them again!

Cheers!

Well, the "gizmo" you speak of is called an oxy-acetylene torch and some braze rod. I guess a TIG welder could work, but more tricky. Definately possible to fabricate some mounts and weld to the fork. Will void warranties. A lot of custom bike makers could hook you up, or if you got the skillz, do it yourself.

Yeh i know what your gettin at an i have a few friends in the welding business so if i can't find anything it'll be in their hands!
But seriously though you can get a bracket that attaches to the forks! trust me i've seen one and my LBS have also told me that they DO exist! i've just gotta find one.
I see the google bots bin havin a go!Is it just me or is there no links in the ad bot post? If there is can someone copy them and paste them into a post cos on my computer its blank??

Bikester 02-18-04 07:00 PM

I see the links. forgot about the add blocking on my firewall!!

Bikester 02-18-04 07:03 PM

Ive seen them for the back dropouts, but never for the front. Besides, any braket you put on the fork would be so unreliable, and i would be nervious riding with it. Think about the mechanics of it: on a front fork, there really isn't anything to bolt into. It would have to be done using friction alone. Think of how out of adjustment they would be all the time, and how easily they could fail. If you can hook yourself up with a custom fab bracket and a welder who knows what he/she is doing, then you could have disks for less than 100 bucks. Trust me. hell, i could fab the bracket in this colleges machine shop!

Yeh i see what your getting at trekkie. It would be just a couple of metal clips holding it on. Probly wouldn't handle braking from the downhilling speeds!
Guess ill have to go see my welders.
And if that fails it'll be new forks!hmm 1.5 inch headset they should be fun to find!!
cheers for the info!

Any welder worth the spark burns on his skin will be able to whip up a system for you, guarenteed. The fork WILL have to be repainted though.

The one thing i'll say about V-brakes is that if you are riding a trail that is so muddy that it clogs your brakes, you shouldn't be riding anyway because of how much it is damaging the trail, sometimes irreversably. The advantage of the disk is stopping power and undamaged rims, but you should price out the cost of a new fork with brake tabs. BUT, if its Cannondale, the fascists that run the company don't allow different forks, as far as i know. As far as a paint job, get some Rustolium outdoor grill paint. You gotta learn how to do the poor-boy thing!!

you can get an adapter taht sizes down the cannondale head tubes from 1.5 to 1 1/8.

I would recommend duct tape, for all your attaching disc brakes to your bike needs.

i do not do most of my braking in front unless im on an incline i have my back set tighter than my front so the front helps the back not to lock up but when i use front mostly i do more damage to trails AND me by the lack of control on the front while going downhills.i love the duct tape idea!thats a hoot!! painting will be a neat idea, think of all the possible things you can do to make your bike stand out or you could leave the weld burns, that would stand out pretty good.the site before did not work when i tried to click it on.
