Which chain for hybrid 8 and 9 speed rig?

Hi all.

I have a 1999 Raleigh M80 that's been hanging in my garage for 7 years or so mostly unused. I recently put a short FSA stem and 2" riser bars on this bike and now I'm loving it (HATED the original long stem and straight bars).

So I've gone a bit crazy and ordered a bunch of XT level components off of eBay this week to upgrade. Got an XT 11-30 rear cog (same spacing as OEM), XT front and rear derailers, XT 22/32/44 newer crankset (with Octalink BB), and XTR rapid fire shifters.

If I'd gotten an older style XT crankset with 22/32/42 chainrings (same as OEM), then I'd just get the IG chain like the one that came with the bike. But since I bought the newer style of crankset with Octalink BB and more teeth on the large chainring, I am unsure of what chain to get that will work with this rig. No doubt I should have asked this question before I bought the newer style cranks, but here I am. Should I get an IG or an HG chain for this mostly 8-speed rig? Thanks for the help. I really do appreciate it!

ETA: Also, the bike originally came with a 110mm spindle and the shell width is listed as 68mm. So does that mean I need a 68X110 BB for this XT crankset? Would 68X109.5 work? Or 68X118? Forgive me for my ignorance on this. I'm a noob when it comes to component replacement.

BTW... I just sold my motorcycle and picked-up a close-out 2008 Fisher HiFi (base model) to play around with on the trails, so this Raleigh will be mostly backup/road bike. I wouldn't have even bothered to upgrade it had I known I was going to get the Fisher, but I just sort of went with my impulse (it was a pretty good closeout price).

Your chain needs to match the cassette. That's it. The 109.5 bottom bracket should work. If you run the wider one, the derailer may not reach.

Thanks shooter! That's the info I was looking for. So it sounds like I need to go with the IG chain since I bought an XT cassette that was rated for "8 speed" and had the same specs as the OEM cassette. Will do. And that's good to know about the BB. Will look for the shorter one then. Thanks again!

68x 110 BB. HG chain, not IG. Sounds like you already know what you need, but I must ask about the XTR shifters, Are they 8 speed? or are you just going to adjust it out with the limit screw?

Cool. Will go with the HG then.

The shifters are 8-speed XTR that I won on eBay.
