I ride, race, and break that bike lol.
The stock parts arent that great, but they will get you going, and are fine. Ride them till they break and upgrade them.
The frame isnt Treks best frame, but it has held up to my abuse, and its still true, no cracks.
I personally would recommend you spend the little bit of extra money for the 4300 (next step up) Frame is better, and it has disk mounts on the rear.

I just bought a trek 3900 about 3 weeks agos. I have already broke the pedals (replaced them with clipless), the handlebars bent (replace them with aluminium handlebars), and the forks busted, and had to replace the back derailer (got a limp stuck in the spokes and bent it). And I am not even that serious of a mountain biker and I dont jump dirt. I will have about 800 to 900 dollars in this bike after I buy new forks so my suggest(if your going to ride almost every weekend like me) GO AHEAD AND SAVE YOUR MONEY AND BUY AN 800-1000 DOLLAR BIKE!

How much does the 3900 go for? One thing that I notice is that if you want a decent bike to start out with $400-500 is a good range. That bike looks like it will work out OK for a beginner, but if you want to get into some rough XC or trail riding you may want something with a better fork. If you get a bike you like you will be more inclined to ride.

Yea 3900 is ok for a beginner or a fire road rider and such, but the 4300 is the best entry level cheap bike from trek, in my opinion.
My 3900, since I ride rather hard, has been a lot of trouble.
the stock fork is just junk. But so is every other fork ive had...
