Saw that over on RM today. Strikes me as a romp on the world's narrowest fire road. A lot of chatter on the other forum about the passing.

Other than the obvious passed-rider-plummeting-into-an-abyss safety issue, the passing itself is pretty mild . . . depending on your perspective.

I wasn't referring to the passing its self (not to bad for the width of the trail) but more along the lines of the etiquette or lack there of.

^^ Agreed. Most of it was sneak-attack or a whistle at the last second. Bad.

I have never been downhilling (mtb) but I have been downhilling (ski) and found that most people gave some advanced warning. Is this the way it is for downhilling (mtb) in most cases?

Advance warning is the etiquette norm for sure. Things that work against you hearing of course are wind noise, a full-face helmet, the general chatter of terrain and your bike if the course is rough and your own focus and concentration on what's ahead of you - - especially if you are really pushing it.

Generally, though, slower riders knowing that they are in a mixed-ability situation (say, an open practice) should be in tune to what is going on behind them as well and be ready to yield to the faster riders overtaking them.
