Snakes & Adders

Greetings,

Out riding today i almost ran over 2 snakes on seperate occasions, which got me thinking. Is it safe just to ignore them as im situated higher then them on bike? or should i be wary riding during the hotter months?
Not sure is snakes can reach my ankles, but if they can that definalty is not good.

Im from Australia, so they are more then likely venomous.

Regards,

BRK

Dude your snakes and spider(funnel web) are killers. I was watching animal planets 10 most venomous snakes and the top 6 came from Aus. You get bit by a taipan, mountain biking with your blood pumped up in the middle of nowhere, just dig a hole and get in.
Not to mention the Box Jellyfish. WTF is up with that place?

If you're going slow enough to avoid...do it. If you're going DH...I think you'll buzz them quick enough to live to ride another day.

G'day

Dropbears are crazy deadly, too. Don't hang out under any trees in Australia.

Most snakes can definitely bite you while you're on a bike. Not sure about smaller ones. As was mentioned, avoid them if possible.

I'd definately avoid them. Have you ever heard of snake bite resistant tires? You may want some of those.

I ride in Mexico and see a lot of snakes on the trail (along with tarantulas about the size of my hand). I don't think the snakes are a big issue if you hit one going fast while it is slithering across the trail. A rattler prepared to strike could definately get your ankle though if you rode past one that was agitated.

I mostly worry about falling off the bike and landing on a snake and getting bitten that way. I carry a phone but doubt that the Mexican Red Cross would get up to me in time to do me any good.

always go down the trail first, the 2nd guy that passes by the snake is the one that gets bit.

I find the best deterrent against a snake is to get off the bike, Bear Grylls that little b*tch, twirl it around over your head and toss it far far away from you.

15% of the time it works EVERY TIME.

That is my biggest worry when I think about it. I've only come across a snake once and I did not notice it. The guy behind me stopped so I looped back and saw that it was a snake curled up on the trail. I have absolutely no idea how it got all curled up in path in the 5 seconds between me and him, but it was plenty big enough that if I wasn't paying attention when I hit it I could fall over.

Ride with a cell phone.
There are a lot of places in Australia where it would take upwards of half a day for a ambulance to reach, even assuming that A:you have cell phone reception there, and B: the ambulance can reach it.

So what does that say about the last solar eclipse? Were you taking a dump or was Uncle Sam bending you over again?
