Mountain Bike Suggestion (used)

I'm just getting back into cycling after a 20 year absence. Bought a road bike and I'm really enjoying riding again and looking forward to a few centuries in the Spring. I'm also in the market for a used mountain bike. I'm not interested in doing anything technical, but would like to be able to take 20 mile rides on fire roads and similar terrain in the very hilly parks surrounding the Santa Clara Valley. 20 years ago I could do this on the run, but those days are long gone. Probably any name brand would do the trick, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If it helps I'm 6' 212 lbs, soon to be 200 lbs and headed toward 190, my running weight.

P.s., I'm looking for a used mountain bike, not a used suggestion.

What's your budget? Let that be your guide.

Then, hit up all the local shops to see if they have anything used or new that fits your budget and fits you. Then craigslist and ebay. Or, reverse that order if you like.

Brand wise, it really will just depend on what you find used around you as to what your selection will be.

OK - looking to spend $300 or so. When I look in Craigslist I see a goodly number of MTBs for $100 and I'm extremely leary of these. A few bikes are in the $250-$400 range. I'll be riding fire/ranch roads and well conditioned trails. I assume I would look for a name brand bike that originally retailed for $500-$750 hard tail depending upon its current age and abuse.
