hahahah. it was a cold weekend. it dipped below 40 in the night and i wasn't quite prepared. i had warmer clothes, but it was more an issue when you stopped you got a little chilled. when it is late and you're tired and it is a little "cold" it is easy to be a wuss.

no, i looked into these 24 hours and tried to do my research the best i could before doing it. i found a site with a lot of tips.
they recommended swapping a more comfortable seat for these 24 hr things. so i looked at my "roadie" seat and uhhh, yeah so i bought the wtb. i swapped it back to the nutcracker now.

I saw the map, but I can't get a good feel for the course by just looking at the topo map alone. Anyway, I was kind of hoping to get the OP's subjective reading of the course, especially how it felt to be riding up the same damn hill for 12 laps. For example, in pic #4 that sandy hill that he's coming down looks like fun, but if there are any hills like that in the reverse direction, even if they are slight, they could wear a guy down after many hours....
i mean i don't want you guys to think i was on some type of epic fagerlin trail or anything or like lance at leadville.
never the less, it's still a mtb bike trail.
hmmm, the monotony of laps...uhhh, you know it was not too bad. you start to think you are a master at having a hot line in places.

Ah, yes, if I cant think of any other way I would rather feel that much pain, than a 100 mile ride. Good stuff.
I've only done a max of 34 miles in one ride, but to be fair our trails are always mud-soaked, not like your bone dry trails out there, a lot more rolling resistance.

when i have my regular 2 lap race here in the sport class it should feel like cake! of course i will be riding at a much higher heart rate...but just the mental part of knowing i only have to do 2 vs 12 laps

yeah...you are way more gnar than mx. That guy's weak. (is this your insinuation, because it looks to be) i feel another e-race brewing.
Seriously...you must have some sort of self loathing issue to keep subjecting yourself to all of this truth that you are apparently unaware of. Truth being that just about every response to you ends up with a big "bs" stamp of dis-proval.

Good job, MX. Solid pictures. 24 hour race is some pain that I'm not sure I'll ever be willing to go through. You planning on riding another one in the future? You might wind up in 4th....
Despite all of that, I think the best part is that the thread is about to turn into another pissing contest.
I rode 642 miles once, but it was on Mars where there isn't that much mud.

i know now to keep my eye out way in advance. i might have a couple 12 hours coming up. i hope i can find one in the spring.
i will try to do the moab one next year. that is sort of the mecca of them i think. that tinker juarez does it...and he got second. they go straight through the night and pretty fast as well. probably faster than what i can do for just a single lap!
but i looked at the results and i think i might be able to be top 1/3. it would basically boil down to whether or not i could go non stop with no sleep and have no major bike problem. if i could do this, i might be around top 20 out of 80. i would feel good about that.

nice job, man. i'd say that gave you a pretty decent feel for the bike.
you know i'm just giving you a hard time about the tires, right? for that kind of thing i sure as hell would be rolling some narrow micro knobbies or semi slicks as well. i've got no interest in racing, but it's nice to see those that do.

well i know a lot of people don't like hutchinson it seems. i basically wanted a light 2.0 tire. these are decent and they were on sale for 18 dollars. so i thought that was good price.
as far as seat time prior to race, i had hoped to have a couple weekend 6-8 hour rides in prep...instead i got one short ride in and then went to the race.
i still have more dialing i can play with on the suspension...if i want to mess with a good thing

i had to be sure that full suspension was not just a fad before i got one.
well here is a tid bit of info. i go off heart rate a lot. i know it is not the best way and stuff...it works in a pinch and i am very familiar with it.
my max is around 194 last i checked. often times on my shorter 2 hr/20 mi sport class races my HR will be pretty high, ave around 180.
never having done one of these 24 hr races, i kind of arbitrarily told myself i would shoot for around 150 bpm.
i held true to this for the most part. i think i ave about 140-160 depending upon how hot/cold it was. my pace was consistent.
i actually have this on my garmin 305. i have not down loaded info yet. but it should be only "moving" info. it auto pauses when stopped.
i think next time i will push my limit just a tad more. actually, if i just focus on another lap or two it would serve just as well

Me too, but the SB8's...like I said...they grip like a sonofagun on rocks and roots as long as you're riding in the dry.
I'm jealous...I've always wanted to pick each and every part out for my ride with little regard to price and more emphasis toward what would give me the biggest grin-factor. One day those kids will be moved out.

i just want to squeeze in a guru geneo, then i am folding!
the mojo did end up being spread over nearly 8 months. that helped a little. sad, it is probably worth more than the kelly blue book of my p/u truck

thank you much! well, i sort of did this cold.
somewhat displeased with my current situation, i have focused my efforts once again towards physical fitness. since about june, i have been doing a fair amount of running on and off road, lots of road cycling in 115 degree az summer, and of course mountain bike riding.
a fellow regular member here on bike forums and myself are doing the louisville, kentucky Ironman in august 2009. that has sort of been my ultimate focus...to do an Ironman since this past june. i don't truly like running all that much. i have a half marathon next week and a full marathon in january to prepare for that august Ironman.
i have a 12 hr duo mountain bike race this saturday. i would have done solo, but sort of filling in and doing a favor for a friend who couldn't make it after signing up with this other friend.
my largest concern was eating. i think i nailed it. i have never been one to get nauseated with intense, long activity. don't get me wrong, i reach volitional exhaustion and sometimes cannot pedal anymore on those century road rides in the heat, but i never feel like i am going to puke and i can keep fluids and food stuff down
my nutrition for this 24 hr race was primarily Hammer supplement based with little whole foods. just some pasta and i think one banana. some red bulls and prophylactic NSAID starting late in the night. in all honesty, i wanted to keep my GI tract "clean" and light over that 24 hours.
so little prep, but decent shape. i did find a great resource online about 24 hr racing and used that to help organize all my crap...lights, batteries, supplements, etc all organized in zip locks and rationed out in advance. if anyone wants the link let me know.
i learned a lot and cannot wait for another one to come around. i am going to try my best to do the moab 24hr next year.
thanks

Hey, good job, MX. I've done the running 24-hour thing (well, relay team, anyway) but have not attempted solo or on the bike yet. Your effort has provided more inspiration.

the Ironman should be far more inspiration! too bad it is off-topic here. i just don't think i could handle a tri forum!!
i would like to do an off road tri someday. they are not too popular yet...i don't think.

Our local promoter almost tackled hosting an Xterra off-road tri one year but backed out. Sure wish he would have; that's still very much on my 'must-do' list.
If you decide to try the Coeur d'Alene Ironman sometime, give me a shout; I'd be happy to play host to an MX 'base camp' for the event.
BTW, I don't think it's possible to go OT on your own thread. It's yours.
