24 hour solo attempt (pics)

here are some pics of my first 24 hr race. learned a lot. got 9th place at 122 miles. six way tie of 12 laps (sorry, i have to put this in here) one more 10 mile loop instead of tossing and turning trying to sleep another hour would have put me in 4th place with 13 laps. oh well

please don't laugh at me in these pics

still very early...maybe mile 25 or 35

positioning might look a little funky here, but i am trying to change things up a bit to last the whole time.

my friend behind me. i made a decision before the race to ride with him when he went out. he was able to do 5 laps...i did 12 laps. after looking at results, looks like i would have been 7th if i did not ride with him. but it was nice.

early sunday, maybe mile 90. not as fun. i am cold too...

okay, all done.

thanks

Very nice. Where did this take place? Looks like some fast rolling tires on your ride. Share some insights as to what you learned in a race like this (not that I have any ambitions to try it, LOL)

Good job!

arizona. i am getting flak from others for the tires they are fairly narrow and fast. probably not as much traction as many would like.

things i learned:
  1. have support if you can
  2. know how you truly stand and don't give up when you are actually doing well compared to others in class
  3. don't listen to others parked next to you who might be trying to sabotage your performance
  4. don't try to do "one more lap" before it gets dark
  5. don't try to do "one more lap" with your Rx sunglasses
  6. carry at least a very tiny light of some sort for an emergency or stupidity (see above)
  7. bring extra warm clothes for the night, i would rather be too hot and sweat than too cold

those were the main things. they would have got me 4th...hehehhehe, hard for me to let that go

Can you post some info about the course? I wonder what kind of terrain you could ride on for 150 miles on a full suspension bike without completely exhausting yourself...

Hahaha!!! I just noticed MX that you changed the saddle from that girly little nutcracker you posted for the initial build.

Keep the comfy one.

Well, I've done 150 miles on a road bike and, yes, it was exhausting. I was rolling on smooth pavement and skinny tires. So, I can't begin to imagine how tough a mountain ride of the same distance would be. So, maybe post a link to the race flyer or something?

I think it was probably this one:

Photo #6 had a deeply embedded secret decoder clue.

Ah thanks. It says on the site:
The 12 & 24 Hours of Fury course is the perimter loop of the McDowell Competitive Track. Also known as sort-tech-long the loop is 10 miles long.
Any significant climbing on that course? That's the thing that kills me every time, dragging my 34lb FS up a lumpy hill in the granny gear.

Further reading/ researching would have answered some of your questions - - once again, embedded deeply in sercret-decoder sections of the 4 Peaks Racing web site. I believe this is a trail map with topo underlay:

I saw the map, but I can't get a good feel for the course by just looking at the topo map alone. Anyway, I was kind of hoping to get the OP's subjective reading of the course, especially how it felt to be riding up the same damn hill for 12 laps. For example, in pic #4 that sandy hill that he's coming down looks like fun, but if there are any hills like that in the reverse direction, even if they are slight, they could wear a guy down after many hours....
