Maxxis High Rollers Size vs. Reality!
I purchased a set of Maxxis High Rollers today for use as an all around XC/FR setup. They are the 2.35's but I noticed that they didn't appear much wider than a 2.1. So I measure them and they actually measure 2.1, does anyone know why this is?

The tires measure narrow...
simple answer eh? Minions and mobsters run big. In reality highrollers are simply that. Very very tall and not so wide. They aren't meant to be a big fat freeride tire. They roll fast and smooth...perfect tire for what you are describing. |
oh and btw. All tires don't measure up. Tioga DH 2.1 measures colser to 2.3 etc...I don't know of any tire that is exact as there is no standard for measuring. And also, tire width would change per inflation and if you measure weighted on ground or unweighted at the top. Put the high roller to 35 pounds, weight the bike and measure the tire width on the ground (under the tire)...;)

Maelstrom - Thanks for the info! Makes perfect sense! Now that you mention it, it also would make sense that a taller tire like the high roller will actually be wider on the ground when under weight; the taller sidewall has more room to disperse at lower pressures. I was only concerned in the first place because I wanted a little wider tire for added traction and stability on technical descents. Previously I haven't riden anything wider than a 2.1.

I had the same initial concerns however this tire hooks up. One of my favorites on loose pack. I wish they would come out with a standard measurement, pressure etc..but it isn't likely to happen.
Enjoy them :) |
Also, Rim size affects the width of the tire. The bigger the rim....the bigger the tire.
