Long bike store visit today...
So I've been wanting to get a decent mountain bike (read not from Wal-Mart) for a few years now.
I went to the shop today and looked at a series of bikes. My range is $500 initially, I can do $700 if the bike is worth it. The primary contenders are the Trek 4500, Trek 6000, and Specialized Rockhopper.
The shop currently has a last year models Rockhopper on hold for me. For about $440 I can pick it up.
My main question is whether or not disc brakes are worth it up front, or if waiting to upgrade is something to consider.
I live in New England, so there's plenty of mud. Most of my riding will be standard trail riding, and occasionally going technical. I don't see myself doing more than a 3 foot drop on a bike. I have test ridden the 4000 series from trek and the Rockhopper before both feel comfortable. I sat on the 6000 but didn't ride it today.
So ultimately, should I pick up the last years Rockhopper and upgrade later, or spend more money upfront and get something with disc brakes on it, and which bike would be suggested if that's the case?

Ok so that ultimately has it boil down to a Rockhopper for $440 or a Rockhopper Comp Disc for what I assume would be a bit over $700. That's a decent price jump there. I can most likely afford the $700 it would be a bit of a stretch, but is it worth it over the 08 Rockhopper?

Do the wheels on the 08 have disc ready hubs? BB5's or BB7 brakes can be found fairly cheap but if you need new wheels, or new hubs laced on, it may be about as cheap to go ahead and get the 09 comp disc. The shop could answer all this for you, if you ask them.

I decided on the '09 Comp Disc, and my girlfriend picked up the '09 Myka HT Elite Disc (strange two series, pretty much same gear) The shop had to order them, so now it's still a waiting game.

Yea, I figured as much...just found it funny they call it two different series, because with the Rockhopper there is an elite series too.
