Riser bars??

I'm seeing a lot bikes on here with riser bars. Most people around where I'm from ride flat's.

Are risers just fixing riding position for you or is there another underlying reason? Like they're the coolest.

width/back and upsweep/rise (from near flat to 1-2" on average)/fit/fashion. a little combo of all that, in no particular order.

getting a nice back and upsweep also allows one to fine tune the feel at the controls when riding depending on how forward or backwards one rotates the bar within the stem clamp.

there aren't a lot of flat bars that offer the same width/sweep at this point, either.

all depends on how/what/where you ride.

It's personal preference, what ever makes you comfortable.

Could be just me, but think flats are more jarring to my hands and wrists. Riser bars seem to "flex" a little bit (in a good way) and are more comfortable.

I ride risers b/c I don't want a silly 15 degree stem. I want the more upright riding position. Don't forget that there are different styles of riding that necessitate (or at least are more comfy with) a different rider postition. I used flat bars and long/low stems back in the day when circle'y spinning, heart rate monitoring, lap time, cyclometer using was my style. Now...I don't care all that much how long it takes me to get up the hill as long as I can fully enjoy it on the way back down. It's difficult to tweak it out on jumps and have descending control when you're able to clean your front knobs with your tongue.

BTW...where are you from? That could describe a bit why they're using flats. Lots of Kansans use flats b/c KS is XC. You would see alot more aggressive riser setups maybe in BC, in contrast.

Still though...risers for XC seems to be an ever growing preference.

32" of low rise. Like a fat girl with too much muffin top, they may need a bit of trimming.

I ride XC with Risers.
I've never ridden flats yet though, so I guess that make my opinion useless...

I'm from Arkansas. Mostly XC around me, but there's always going to be hills if I pick the place. I just can't stand to just pedal and pedal with no relief. I like the speed on the down hills.

We've got lots of trees too. I cringe when I see your WIDE bars. Mine are 23" and I find myself getting too close to the trees with them, brushing my sholders from time to time ya know. I can't imagine 32". I'd be spending more time getting back up than riding.

You guys have given me the bug though. I'm sure I'll end up getting some mid rises.

I know they're heavier, but the Easton EA50's are really affordable right now. I've seen them as low as $20 I think within the last month or so.

I've been running the same EA70 OS HiRise since '06 and it's shown me no weakness. Feels great, good rise, good sweep. I've actually got mine cut down to 25'ish inches. I was shopping for a new one recently until my fork started acting up. I'm gonna stick with it for a while longer, I think.

Have you ridden the Womble there in AR?

How close are you to Womble? How big is your yard? ( Room for tents? ) Just sayin

harleystyles 03-03-09 12:55 PM

Have not rode the womble. It's about 3 hours from me.

I was actually looking at the EA 50's. I was lurking and saw the post about them a while back.

ed 03-03-09 01:16 PM

Womble looks like a fun time. They offer a shuttle service there so you don't have to ride 80mi...just the 40 one way:lol:

bike too long! 03-03-09 06:37 PM

For what it's worth, Syncros is making a flat bar with the same sweep and feel of a riser (10 deg. sweep). It's called the Flat Top. It was offered as an alternative for 29ers particularly, I believe.
