Speedplay something or other on my road bike. They are so old I don't even remember which ones they are so I almost went frogs for my mtb but then I found Bebop. Check them out. I only had them since the end of last year so I can't tell you about the quality yet but they are the light and simple and offer some float. Float is good for my old knees and easy to get in and out of. Anyone else use Bebop?

Sure. Speedplays are well known for having float which means that your foot can rotate just a bit but still stay locked in place. I had other clipless pedals that locked my foot in place and they bothered my knees. When I got the speedplays that all went away. I was very close to going with their frogs but then I found Bebop and they also emphasized their float so I gave them a try. I think it is about 10 degrees or so before you can release but it adds comfort.

i've always liked eggbeaters. they dont have much float, dont hold mud, and are so easy to enter.
i've been curious to try spd pedals, however i dont want to have to buy another set of shoes.

I've found (by hanging around the trail head for the "after ride discussions" from the "older' folk) that the SPD's take beatings better than Egg Beaters.
That is going on only by the fact that I've smashed mine up a few times, and they work perfect still, and from what I have heard.

Shimano sucks. I hated them. Heavy, complicated, they'd get gunked with gunk all the time. I had to keep fiddling with them or my knees would bother the hell out of me. I switched to Frogs in 98 and rode them until they where worn down. For a change, I've just put Egg Beaters on. I'm really happy with the 4 positions on the pedals. It makes it very easy to get in. Egg Beaters are relatively cheap, Speedplay just rocks. I've yet to try the ATACs so I have no opinion, but I will never set foot on another SPD pedal.

i was apprehensive to use egg beaters on my mtb, they worked fine on my road bike though.
the lower priced eggbeaters are much heftier and have more substance to them than the more expensive ones from my experience
i havent had a problem with them yet
