Headset Questions....

Alright, 1) anybody know anything about this headset. Never really hear of this brand before any idea as to its quality? (Woodman Axis)
2) would it fit one my bike?
The new one i want to get is: http://www.ride-this.com/index.php/w...t-118-red.html and the specs for my bike are: http://www.fisherbikes.com/bike/model/tarpon/fullspecs
Any input is appreciated,
Thanks

Yep, looks like a standard headset whereas your is some semi integrated bs. What's wrong with your current headset? Might need to check with ol' GF for options...

Well, if you service the current headset you might solve the problem, but if you're really looking for a new color scheme ....

Take your pic from these headsets:

http://www.universalcycles.com/shopp...?category=1691

Yes, there's a Woodman Axis that's a flush mount "Internal Cup Type" headset.

Alright, now seeing as im such a noob and know nothing about headsets/forks (as thats the only thing i have yet to upgrade on my bike) is the headset unique to the fork or the frame? I've been looking into a new headset and am loving how that woodman axis is tinted the same as my wheelset/grips but also looking to possibly upgrade my fork sometime in June as my b-day is the 12th and i have an awesome fiancé... anyways, i dont wanna blow $$ on a new headset if it wont fit a new fork. So if thats the case should i just wait to get the headset until i get the fork? Also (i know this will open up a can of worms) but any suggestions on forks? I'm sporting a tricked out 09 GF Tarpon at the moment and was look around $2-250 limit and im seeing some pretty good ones on JensonUSA/Nashbar and such and just wanted some input, i do mostly freeride/XC and am looking for one with lockout and pretty good travel but thats about all i know, ive been eyeing the Marzocchi XC 600 ATA 2 http://www.jensonusa.com/store/produ...Xc+600+08.aspx
but not sure if it will fit... any input is appreciated
~Thanks

Headsets can be sized for either 1", 1 1/8", 1 1/2", or 1 1/4" (cannondale) steerer tubes.

There are a ton of Internal Cup-Type headset insertion point sizes, but the norm is 44mm.
* 38.0mm at Insertion
* 40.0mm at Insertion
* 41.0mm at Insertion
* 41.4mm at Insertion
* 41.8mm at Insertion
* 42.0/47.0mm at Insertion
* 42.0mm at Insertion
* 44.0mm at Insertion
* 44.8mm at Insertion
* 50.0mm at Insertion

Your typical MTB steerer tube is 1 1/8". Some burly bikes have 1.5". Another fad is the 1.5 lower bearing with a 1 1/8" upper necessitating a tapered steerer tube on the fork. Not a new thing, but should be interesting to see if it becomes the standard.

Did a little googling, seems your bike probably has an FSA Orbit IS2 headset which appears to be of the 45mm variety, but would help to know just what the headset you've got now is. I still like the idea of simply servicing it and maybe getting a red top cap...and blinging out a Tarpon has got to be more expensive than just buying a better bike in the first place FWIW

I'd almost bet you $$$ it's the fairly standard 44mm insertion FSA Orbit Z or ZS type.

Well i got lucky and found a cheap 09 GF Tarpon for $200 on craigslist and then threw another $250/$300 into it through Jensonusa/LBS employee discounts/craigslist and ended up with:

Ritchey SC rizer's, Easton EA50 stem, deore brake levers, XT shifters, XT 9-speed cassette, Deore hollowtech cranks, WTB Speed saddle (Hand me-down) Mavic Crossride Wheelset, Conntinental Explorer foldables, XT front-der, XTR rear-der, and some crazy ass loud DT-swiss hub's my cousin who works at the LBS took it apart and said was some really good $200 one.

As for the headset, i took it semi-apart to put the new bars and stem on and so i know how to put it back together and such, is it just a matter of doing that to figure out if it is a 44mm insertion FSA Orbit Z, ZS type or FSA Orbit IS2 45mm?
It has Bontrager symbols on the topcap, but says Cane Creek below, thats why im confused....

Bontrager top cap and CC headset? You could have your cousin look at it?

A lot if not all stock headsets on Trek bikes are "VP for Cane Creek" The bonti top cap is just more Trek branding.

I would bet Ed's money too. I am certain that it is not any of the true integrated type headsets such as this:

It would be really easy to tell by taking it apart again to see the bearing just sits in the frame or if there is a cup pressed in the frame. I am guessing (not really, I know) you find the later. It is also pretty easy to tell by looking at the pictures because ZS headsets require a visibly larger diameter HT than integrated. Chances are you find this

click for specs

judging by the flat dust shield on the top.

Take it apart and take a picture of the findings.
