starting to race again, help!

ive recently decided to start racing XC at local events, but ive been out of the mtb race scene for years. as a kid i was sponsored and got free clothes, but i never payed much attention to how the races worked. i race road now in college, and im wondering if anyone knows if the races are conducted similarly. i guess what im asking is: what kind of license do i need, ive heard a college usa cycling license isnt valid outside of the college circuit? also what are the different categories for adults? i think i want to start slow, just because its been a few years and im an adult now and the competition is probably more serious. any advice would be great. thanks

USAC Cycling is the sanctioning body for most of the legitimate races around. They just changed the classifications this year to align it more to how road competition is laid out:
Cat 1 is what used to be Expert
Cat 2 is what was Sport
Cat 3 is the old Beginner
and there is no semi-pro any more. People in Semi-Pro have had to decide whther to move up to Pro or bump down to Cat1.

If you are NCCA, you are already a USAC member:

. . . though if you just have a road license, you will also need to get an MTB license upgrade in addition to race MTB. That's about it. Good luck!
