Did I get screwed ? - need your opinion

I went to my LBS and ordered a Kona Big Unit 29er. The owner checked stock and said he could order it and I could pick it up in 2 weeks. I paid him full retail. 2K A few days later he calls me and says the bikes are not in stock with Kona, but he can get the frame and all the same components and build it.

I picked up the bike today. When I got home I noticed the fork color wasnt the same as on the catalog. No big deal, it is white instead of black. But then I start to look at the detail of the components and see they are not all the same as the spec. He told me all the components were available.

Do I have a problem I need to address with the owner OR are the components he used of similar spec and quality. (if they are I am OK - even though he should have told me)

OK you pieces and parts gurus....I didnt list what he gave me that was spec.... Chime in - is anything he gave me an upgrade or is it all lower cost components?

WHAT WAS KONA SPEC *************** WHAT HE GAVE ME

Fox 32 F29 RL 80mm black ************** Same spec but wrong color white
FSA Orbit DL ************************ FSA
RaceFace Atlas SS Arms *************** Avid Vdrive
RaceFace Atlas SS Crank ************** Avid
Shimano M520 Clipless pedal ************* Kona Platform (this was my request)
Kona XC/BC Deluxe Riser **************** FSA 282
Kona XC/BC Deluxe ******************** FSA OS190
Formula Disc ************************* Avid Disc
Formula Disc ************************* Avid Disc
Mavic TN 719 Rims ******************** Sun Ringle Equalizer 23
WTB Rocket V Comp Seat *************** WTB Laser V

The rims look especially concerning - they are awfull narrow on those big tires - I weigh 230lbs

i'd take mavics over suns, and are the brakes hyrdro or mech? formula makes a few really really nice hydros so it depends on which formula vs which avid, like a juicy 3 is worth alot less than an avid elxir cr carbon

On the fork normally the white version is the nicer non oem, the black is only available oem and is the rebound/lockout version, the white is rebound/lockout/compression/lockout blowoff adjust

The laser v is an expensive light saddle, but i like the feel of the rocket v better, so technically not a downgrade

avid vdrive arms and avid cranks? do you mean crank arms? thats part of the crankset, also avid vdrive? tmk avid doesn't make cranks did you mean FSA V-drive?

The brakes are the Shimano Hyd that are the spec on Kona's website.
The crank Arms say Avid. Not sure about the rest of the crankset maybe it was FSA Vdrive. I wil have to check in the morning

I thought the rims were an issue. I have not seen many bikes that had so thin a rim (23) Looks odd on those big tires. As you said, the rims alone are of concern.

quick googling shows the sun rims at ~60ea and the mavics at ~80ea, but both are welded, idk if the mavics are actually any wider

the rims are the only thing that looks like a downgrade that you will actually care about, so i might just go in if i was you and just say your arn't happy with the rims or w/e and forget the rest, avid brakes are great, and fsa parts are prolly better than kona prorietary ****, thats usually a cost saver for the company, but that fsa stuff is def their lower end stuff, but in the end i wouldn't bother fussing about bars and that kinda stuff, just take care of the wheels and u'll be happy with the bike

I spoke to the owner who acknowledged the components were not up to spec and he is going to replace them.

Sounds shady, to me. Wouldn't do business, like that.
