Pedals for fixed gear mountain riding?

I've got a fixed gear 29er that I use for commuting, but now that the weather's getting summery I want to start taking it out on trails outside the city. I've never ridden fixed on trails but I hear it's quite a ride. My problem is pedals. Right now I use commuter-type pedals with toe clips/straps, which I wouldn't want for trail riding in case I have to bail off my bike in a hurry. But clips/straps is how you slow down a fixed bike, so...

I've got avid BB7s on the bike, do I just get platforms and use the brakes to slow down? Is there another option? PS I don't want cleats or a clipless setup

Fixed on trails, while doable, I wouldn't do it. You can't change the pedal position to clear rocks, logs, etc.

If you do go for it, have fun, but be extra carefull when clearing obstacles.

As far as your question goes, if you don't want clips/straps, and you don't want to go clipless, well really I have no answer for you, I wouldn't recommend it without some type of retention though.

I like Crank Brothers 50/50's and the new profile slims for pedals. As far as fixed gear, no thanks. I prefer single speed w/ freecoaster

You will need to be clipped in.

Also, avoid skidding on trails.

Other than that, have fun.

I use my eggbeaters when I ride fixed. just like I ride on my SS and my geared. The only difference is I run 165mm cranks.

One of these days "square wheel" will be all the rage and people will laugh at those fixed gear off-road woosies
